Located in a building that was originally a synagogue and later a small cinema, the Dogs & Tails bar and café by Ukrainian practice Sergey Makhno Architects is set to become a new gastro-trend of Kiev. Born from the rib of the neighbouring restaurant and café Milk Bar, Dogs & Tails serves fancy hot dogs and cocktails in a fashionable democratic space that features materials such as concrete, black-painted iron and wood, which create a warm and vintage atmosphere.
To highlight the connection between traditional heritage and new design, plaster rosette, stucco works, portals, and the incredible turquoise color of the ceiling have been carefully preserved and restored.
The main thing in its interior is a combination of brutal and elegant things. The designers have played on the contrast, leaving the gold stucco near to rolled metal bares and bricks. Humorous dog portraits, realized specifically for this project, hangs from the wall portraying colorful human-like dog characters.
Tubular neon pendant lights, custom designed by the design studio’s principal Sergey Makhno, hang on the 10 meter bar decorated with metal pipes. A large modern chrome kitchen, located at the back of the bar, is separated from it by a glass wall, drawing the visitors’ attention to the mystery which happens in the kitchen.
