A Luminous Dialectic: PAROS ARCHITETTURA Weaves Light and Fluidity into Casa Tirreno

PAROS architettura's dining room in Casa Tirreno Rome apartment renovation, featuring a luminous glass-brick wall and organic masonry bench.

Nicolò Panzeri

Nestled within a 1970s residential building in Rome’s Montesacro neighborhood, Casa Tirreno stands as a bold reimagining of 1970s Roman architecture. The architectural studio PAROS ARCHITETTURA was tasked with reinterpreting the family apartment for a young couple, embarking on a project of profound spatial and aesthetic synthesis. The intervention sought to honour the memory of the home’s past while boldly sculpting an environment fully attuned to the rhythms of modern life, creating a seamless blend of history and innovation in the heart of Rome.

The organically shaped masonry bench guides the eye from the entrance into the fluid layout of the Rome apartment, establishing its circular narrative.

The core of the redesign lies in a redefinition of the internal layout, conceived according to a logic that privileges fluidity and circularity. The architects have masterfully softened the boundaries between different functions, allowing the domestic spaces to follow one another in an uninterrupted sequence. This approach fosters a continuous visual and physical dialogue between the entrance, the living area, and the kitchen, promoting a sense of openness and connectivity that defines the entire home.

A luminous glass-brick wall acts as a permeable diaphragm, filtering natural light into the living area and anchoring the open-plan space.

Anchoring the living area is a stunning glass-brick wall, a central feature conceived as a permeable diaphragm. This translucent partition expertly filters and diffuses natural light, bathing the social spaces in a soft, ethereal glow. The wall acts as a luminous landmark within the apartment’s plan, enhancing the feeling of lightness and spatial continuity without imposing visual barriers or sacrificing the open-plan ethos.

The continuous system of stained wood panelling extends into the kitchen, integrating concealed storage to ensure formal clarity and functional order.

Emanating from this transparent wall is a strikingly organically shaped masonry bench. This fluid element appears to grow from the partition itself, guiding movement from the entrance deep into the home’s living area. More than just a seating solution, the bench is a distinctive and functional sculptural object that reinforces the project’s circular narrative, physically and visually connecting different zones within the open space.

The choice of materials and finishes prioritizes essential simplicity and functionality, creating a serene and contemporary service space.

Further enhancing the sense of unity, a continuous sheet of resin flooring extends throughout the living spaces. This material choice reinforces the perception of a seamless, continuous landscape underfoot. Complementing this, a comprehensive system of stained wood panelling stretches from the entrance to the kitchen. This linear, rhythmic element seamlessly integrates concealed storage and cleverly conceals all service areas, ensuring both order and formal clarity throughout the apartment.

The private quarters preserve the memory of the family’s past while shaping a renewed, tranquil environment for contemporary living.

The overall choice of materials and finishes reflects a deliberate and successful intention to combine robust functionality with essential simplicity. PAROS architettura has crafted a renewed domestic environment where every element serves a purpose. The resulting family apartment is not just a physical space but a holistic experience—a serene, light-filled sanctuary that gracefully responds to the needs of contemporary living while preserving the gentle memory of its past.
