Noam Gamburg‘s Albuterol Inhaler concept rebuilds one of healthcare’s most overlooked objects around its own molecule, replacing the usual clinical bulk with a translucent, three-pronged shell that reads more like a designed object than medical equipment. Working independently through his studio, bytask.design, Gamburg treats the inhaler less as a piece of equipment to be tolerated and more as a form with its own logic to resolve. The result makes the case that the discomfort most people associate with visible medical devices is a design problem, not something inherent to the object itself.

A form drawn from chemistry, not from precedent, sets the whole object apart. The device’s translucent, three-armed shell splits into a mouthpiece with three separate prongs, echoing the branching structure of the Albuterol molecular structure printed directly onto the casing beside a running dose counter — and the logo, a set of three curved arms, repeats that same geometry in miniature. Gamburg describes the resulting object as built from “translucent surfaces with a modular, customizable construction,” he tells urdesign — a pairing meant to read as considered rather than sterile, closer to a personal object than a piece of equipment.

Real dosing, not just aesthetics sits right on the surface, printed rather than hidden. The label carries the same information any metered-dose inhaler carries — 48 mcg per actuation, 200 actuations per unit, the full chemical formula C13H21NO3, a molecular weight of 239.31 g/mol — but kept legible on the body itself instead of tucked away as a compliance afterthought. Gamburg treats that data as part of the object’s surface language, not as a warning label competing with it. The gesture keeps the concept honest: a device that looks considered still has to read, at a glance, as something that measures a real dose.

In the hand, not just on a shelf is where the three-armed geometry earns its keep. One prong of the mouthpiece meets the lips directly, while the other two rest against the fingers holding it — the same branching form that echoes the molecule also gives the hand three separate points of contact instead of one round barrel to grip blind. Held up to the mouth, the shell’s translucent orange reads warm against skin rather than sterile against a countertop, a quieter shift in inhaler ergonomics that has less to do with looks and more to do with how the object sits in a hand that may not be steady.

Moving past the clinical default is the concept’s explicit target. Where most inhalers default to opaque plastic and a fixed, one-size shape, this one asks what changes if the same device is allowed to look intentional, extending the logic of good healthcare product design beyond hospital settings and into daily carry — a shift also visible in wearables like Onel’s Pulse Pack, which tries to make a self-monitoring device feel personal rather than medical, or Johanna Nilsson’s Moni, built around the same instinct to move a health object out of clinical territory and into daily life. Gamburg frames the wider ambition plainly: the project explores how “thoughtful industrial design can make healthcare products feel more intuitive while blending naturally into everyday life,” he tells urdesign — positioning the inhaler closer to an everyday object than a device singled out by its own appearance, and reflecting a broader shift in clinical aesthetic away from purely functional design.

A concept render, not a released product, and that distinction matters here more than usual: an inhaler’s job is to work reliably in a hand that may be shaking, gripped without much attention to how it looks. Whether a translucent, molded shell can survive that kind of use — repeated grabbing, dropping, one-handed operation under stress — without becoming a second concern layered on top of the first is the open question this inhaler design concept doesn’t yet have to answer, precisely because it hasn’t been built.
