Studio RAP‘s Powerwall wraps a live Dutch transformer station in 322 hand-glazed, robotically 3D-printed ceramic tiles that turn the electromagnetic hum inside its walls into a rippling turquoise relief. Switchstation Beverwijk is a high-voltage substation designed by Powerhouse Company for Dutch grid operator TenneT, the kind of windowless utility building most neighbors learn to stop seeing. Powerwall gives that anonymous volume a surface that finally admits what it does.

Transformer stations are, by design, closed and windowless — infrastructure built to function, not to be looked at. In most cities, high-voltage substations sit anonymously inside residential blocks, brick volumes that carry a district’s electricity without ever explaining themselves to the people who pass them. Studio RAP’s intervention doesn’t disguise that function; it exposes it, treating the façade as a canvas for the forces the building conceals rather than a surface to decorate over them.

Spanning eight by five meters (roughly 26 by 16 feet), the ceramic relief is integrated directly into Switchstation Beverwijk’s existing brick façade, its sweeping spiral forms drawn from the flow lines generated by the transformers behind the wall. An algorithm translated that invisible electromagnetic field pattern into a buildable relief, organizing the sweeps and ripples across the surface so the artwork reads as both static and in motion depending on where a passerby stands.

A translucent turquoise glaze settles into the printed grooves and pools in the recessed areas of each tile, so the artwork’s color shifts with the daylight rather than staying fixed. Depending on the hour and the angle of the sun, the ceramic façade artwork reads pale aqua at noon and deepens toward teal by early evening — a surface that behaves more like weather than like paint.

“The studio embraces the reality that ceramics shrink and warp during the firing process,” van Beerendonk and ter Hall said. “The intense heat of the kiln transforms the raw material, meaning the final piece is never an exact sterile replica of the digital model, but rather an organic, highly characterful architectural element.” That unpredictability is structural to the method, not incidental to it — Powerwall’s surface was always going to be shaped as much by the kiln as by the algorithm that first generated it.

Each of the 322 tiles began as a form generated by Studio RAP’s computational design algorithms, which translate the magnetic field geometry into printable geometry before a robotic clay printer in the studio’s Rotterdam workshop builds it layer by layer. The print path is deliberately tuned to leave a ribbed texture on the surface, so every tile carries a visible record of the arm’s movement through the clay — less a fabrication artifact than a signature of the process itself.

The ribbed texture also does structural work: it amplifies the printing effect the glaze later pools into, and it gives each of the 322 panels enough individual character that no two read identically under changing light. Every panel and tolerance was calculated in advance to accommodate how fired clay actually behaves rather than how a digital model predicts it will. Only once each piece met the studio’s standards was it handed off for on-site assembly into the existing brick façade.

Founded in Rotterdam in 2016 by Lucas ter Hall and Wessel van Beerendonk, Studio RAP has grown into one of the Netherlands’ most closely watched architectural ceramics studios, treating ceramic ornament as a live research problem rather than a decorative finish.

The studio’s broader portfolio follows the same Dutch ceramic tradition into different contexts. Its New Delft Blue gates in Delft reinterpreted traditional blue-and-white porcelain through the same clay-printing process, Ceramic House wrapped an Amsterdam retail façade in tiles that echo knitted textile patterns, and its 3D-printed ceramic walls for Jumeirah Marsa Al Arab carried the technique into a Dubai hospitality project. Powerwall is the first time the method has been pointed at infrastructure rather than a building meant to be visited.

Powerwall’s real test isn’t whether the ceramic relief reads as art from the street — it does — but whether TenneT and other grid operators treat this as a one-off commission or as a template for the thousands of anonymous substations still standing across the Netherlands. A single glazed façade doesn’t fix the deeper problem of how utility infrastructure gets designed by default rather than by intention, and Studio RAP’s tiles are, for now, still the exception rather than the rule.
