Nestled in Kadirur, India, the unique Stoic Wall Residence challenges traditional architectural concepts. Meticulously crafted by the talented team at LIJO RENY, this dwelling is engineered to withstand the region’s harsh climate conditions. More than just a shelter, this residence harmoniously blends with nature, fostering a deep connection with its surroundings.

Spread across a generous 680 sqm, the architects took great care in accommodating the site’s unique features. Irregular contours, existing trees of different sizes, a gentle slope, and accessibility from two main roads were all considered. By carefully balancing these natural and physical elements, along with factors like solar path and wind patterns, the architects were able to determine the perfect position for the house.

To minimize solar heat gain and maximize privacy, the primary section of the residence was strategically placed on the north side, following an east-west axis. This thoughtful approach ensures that the occupants can enjoy a comfortable living environment while staying connected to nature.

The Stoic Wall Residence is divided into four zones spread across three levels, with three zones located on the ground floor. The architects cleverly aligned these zones with the natural topography of the plot, minimizing the need for extensive excavation or earth filling.

The first zone encompasses the formal living area, complete with a foyer and outdoor seating. It is distinct from the main structure and separated by a beautifully landscaped courtyard and an open paved central space. Even the car porch is considered part of this zone, seamlessly connecting it to the rest of the residence.

Moving on to the second zone, you’ll find an open family living and dining area that extends to the outdoor landscape. An indoor courtyard enhances cross ventilation and circulation, creating a refreshing and inviting atmosphere.

The kitchen and its related areas are discreetly tucked away by the architects for privacy, connecting to the dining court on one side and the central entry court on the other. This layout facilitates easy access to the car porch and front yard. The third zone of the residence comprises three bedrooms, a pooja/prayer area, and an adjacent courtyard, all accessible via a private corridor. To accommodate those with mobility challenges, one of the bedrooms is conveniently located on the same level as the family area.

Each bedroom is accessed through a foyer that also serves as a dressing area and connects to an internal open-to-sky courtyard. The bedrooms and their attached toilets open into this courtyard, allowing residents to enjoy the southwesterly winds and monsoon rains. A staircase at the main block’s entry leads to the upper floor, which features an entertainment room doubling as a family space and a master bedroom.

The master bedroom extends into a semi-open lounge area and includes a dressing area and toilet. The first floor is protected from the elements by a screen made of thin fluted terracotta blocks slid onto a vertical metal tube framework. This screen shields the first floor from the sun and rain while providing a private passage accessible from every room.

The architectural form of The Stoic Wall Residence is significant and intriguing, offering glimpses of what lies within. Unlike the architects’ previous project with flowing and expressive exterior walls, this structure is encased in exposed laterite walls for a robust and substantial feel. These walls project outwards at certain points, creating sheltered areas within the landscape that offer privacy and seclusion for the residents. Overall, The Stoic Wall Residence embodies expansive living, with areas flowing into landscaped courtyards, some open to the sky, creating a sense of weightlessness by connecting the home to the surrounding nature. The interior design is simple and elegant.

The interior design features subtle furnishings, complemented by the homeowner’s brother’s photography for a personalized touch. The use of laterite, terracotta, and teak wood materials enhances the cozy ambiance both indoors and outdoors. The landscaping incorporates native plants harmoniously with the existing trees, reflecting the local essence. This results in a modern residence with a distinct regional charm, achieved through a blend of contemporary design elements and traditional materials inspired by the heritage of northern Kerala.
