Antwerp-based designer Fadi Alagi, working with Olivier Verbeke, designed Twin as a smartphone that only becomes genuinely limited when you physically pull it apart, rather than relying on a settings menu anyone can override in two taps. The concept splits one device into two connected halves: a simple phone built around an E-ink display, and a smart module carrying the larger battery and full smartphone functionality. Sliding the two apart doesn’t switch a mode — it removes the capability entirely, for as long as the parts stay separated.
A limit software can’t override. Focus modes, app blockers, and screen-time limits exist on nearly every phone already, and nearly everyone disables or routes around them within days. Twin starts from that failure rather than trying to fix it with another software layer: if restraint keeps losing to a toggle switch, the argument goes, then restraint needs to live somewhere a toggle can’t reach.

Two halves, one phone. Twin is built from recycled plastic and designed as two connected parts that combine into one full-featured device. Attached, it behaves like any contemporary smartphone; the split only becomes meaningful the moment the two halves are pulled physically apart, at which point the simple phone becomes its own standalone unit.

An E-ink display, not a screen. Detached, the simple phone runs on an E-ink display, a technology chosen specifically because it’s easier on the eyes and uses far less power than a conventional screen — a hardware constraint standing in for the willpower a software limit usually asks for. In this state, according to the designer, the device offers only the essentials — calls, texts, and the tools you truly need.

No social media by design. What’s absent matters as much as what’s included. As Alagi puts it, “No social media. No endless notifications. No distractions.” Nothing about the simple phone is a locked-down version of the smart module; it’s a genuinely different object, built around a smaller set of functions rather than a filtered version of a larger one.

Sliding back together. Reattaching the two halves restores full smartphone functionality immediately, without the friction that usually accompanies switching devices: no syncing, no SIM swapping, no setup to redo. The two-part construction is meant to make the full smartphone one physical gesture away, rather than one login away.

Screws instead of glue. The battery can be replaced by removing a few screws from the back of the module, extending the device’s working life past a single battery cycle. On the simple phone, one of those same screws doubles as a strap attachment, letting the detached unit hang from a lanyard or clip onto a bag exactly when it’s meant to be carried on its own.

A shared instinct against distraction. Twin joins a small but growing field of devices treating limited functionality as the actual design goal, not a fallback mode — Punkt’s MC03 splits its interface into a distraction-free “Vault” and the open web to the same end, while Pentagram’s KARRI messenger removes the screen for children entirely rather than restricting what appears on it. Twin’s approach is more literal than either: the restriction isn’t a setting or a missing display, it’s a physical seam built into the object itself.

One phone, two objects. The detail worth sitting with isn’t the E-ink display or the recycled plastic, both reasonable choices for a device like this — it’s that Twin’s only enforcement mechanism is a seam you can feel with your thumb. Every other digital detox tool eventually asks you to trust yourself not to reverse a decision made in software; Twin asks you to physically decide twice, once to slide the halves apart and once again to put them back.
