Bob’s Bungalow: A Story in Architecture by Blair Smith Architecture

Bob's Bungalow: A Story in Architecture by Blair Smith Architecture

Strathmore, a Melbourne suburb characterized by its established Californian bungalow typology, has recently seen a compelling addition by Blair Smith Architecture. This project, aptly named “Bob’s Bungalow,” transcends the typical residential extension, offering a nuanced exploration of spatial relationships and material interplay.

More than simply increasing floor area, the project engages with the existing bungalow’s fabric and the unique narratives of its inhabitants, resulting in a design that resonates with both architectural sensitivity and personal significance. This is not just an addition; it’s a carefully crafted intervention that speaks to the power of architecture to embody shared experiences and foster lasting connections.

The story begins with two soon-to-be retirees, their rescue dogs Archie and Buzz, and the memory of their beloved Bob, the project’s original namesake. Project meetings weren’t sterile discussions of floor plans and materials; they were convivial gatherings filled with food, laughter, and wide-ranging conversations. Films, gardening, cherished artefacts, camping adventures, and decades of life within the original 1930s bungalow became the rich tapestry from which the design emerged.

The clients had resided in the largely untouched bungalow since 1980. The existing lean-to structure, with its convoluted layout, was replaced with a modest 66m² addition, increasing the total floor area to a comfortable 151m². This restrained approach to the building envelope was a conscious decision, driven by a desire to minimise embodied energy, control costs, and preserve the established edible garden.

The simple form of the addition – a rectangular plan crowned with a skillion roof – belies the playful complexity of the interior. Eschewing the traditional separation of dining, lounging, and cooking areas, Blair Smith Architecture opted for a more nuanced approach. The interior is conceived as a series of interconnected architectural elements that flow seamlessly into one another.

The sunken lounge, for instance, is defined by planter-cabinets that appear “grafted” onto intermediate concrete steps, which in turn morph into a fireplace hearth. Tall kitchen cabinets “float” above a concrete step, replacing a conventional kicker, before folding into a timber-lined enclave housing the bathroom and laundry. A curved skylight marks the “library,” a dedicated nook for records, books, and magazines. Adding a touch of whimsy, a terrazzo kitchen bench extends beyond the cabinetry below, supported by slender stainless steel legs.

This dynamic interplay of materials and forms is further enhanced by carefully considered environmental strategies. Manually operated mesh louvres form a dynamic north-facing eave, providing additional solar access and passive heat gain during the winter months. These louvres, developed in collaboration with the owner-builder and aeronautical engineer Karl Schnell, work in tandem with a tiled structural slab and reverse brick veneer walls to efficiently store solar heat, mitigating temperature fluctuations and enhancing the building’s thermal performance.

The project’s narrative extends beyond the present. Plans are already in motion to convert the garage into a self-contained dwelling, ensuring that Bob’s Bungalow continues to evolve and adapt to the changing needs of its inhabitants. It’s a project that embraces the past while looking towards the future, a physical manifestation of an ongoing collaboration and friendship.

Bob’s Bungalow is more than just an addition; it’s a living embodiment of the lives and experiences of its owners. It’s a space that celebrates the beauty of imperfection, the richness of shared memories, and the enduring power of human connection. Unashamedly pastiche-like, it is a testament to the idea that architecture, at its best, can be a true reflection of the human spirit.
