Studio Wok Crafts a Minimalist Artist Retreat from an Old Electrical Cabin

QuadroDesign HQ - Cabin / Studio Wok

In the tranquil landscape surrounding Lago d’Orta, near San Maurizio d’Opaglio in the Italian province of Novara, a remarkable architectural transformation has taken place. Within the grounds of the Quadro faucet company headquarters, an abandoned electrical cabin has been given a new lease on life, thanks to the vision of Studio Wok. This project, known as the QuadroDesign HQ Cabin, represents the second phase of a broader redevelopment following the redesign of the company’s offices and showroom in 2022.

The Magistro family, owners of Quadro, sought to create a versatile space that could serve a variety of functions – from a private family retreat to a venue for business activities or even a temporary artist’s residency. Studio Wok’s response was a thoughtful and sensitive intervention that respects the site’s industrial heritage while introducing contemporary design elements.

At the heart of the project lies the restoration and repurposing of the old electrical cabin. This unusual structure, with its distinct form, presented a unique challenge and opportunity for the architects. By incorporating a system of sliding doors, Studio Wok has effectively blurred the boundary between interior and exterior, creating a strong connection with the surrounding landscape. The cabin now acts as a dynamic hub, activating the company’s outdoor spaces and providing a flexible environment for various activities.

Inside the cabin, the architects have maximized the vertical space by introducing two mezzanines connected by a metal staircase. The lower mezzanine, constructed of warm natural wood, provides a comfortable sleeping area. The existing concrete mezzanine above has been transformed into a more intimate space, bathed in natural light filtering through a strategically placed roof window. The material palette throughout is intentionally restrained, emphasizing the natural textures of the concrete, wood, and metal, and creating a serene and contemplative atmosphere.

The project extends beyond the cabin itself, encompassing the creation of a new outdoor area. A concrete plateau serves as a central gathering space, from which three distinct elements emerge: the restored cabin, a contemporary pergola, and a sleek swimming pool.

The pergola, constructed from galvanized steel profiles, provides a sheltered outdoor living area. Divided into five bays, it offers flexible spaces for dining, lounging, and outdoor cooking. A custom-designed kitchen counter, crafted from stone and sheet metal and sheltered by a lightweight corrugated iron roof, occupies several of these bays, creating a functional and stylish outdoor kitchen.

The swimming pool, partially sunken into the ground and finished in dark anthracite stone, adds a touch of modern elegance to the ensemble. Its monolithic form echoes the lines of the outdoor kitchen, creating a visual harmony and providing ample seating around its perimeter.

The QuadroDesign HQ Cabin stands as a compelling example of adaptive reuse, showcasing the transformative potential of thoughtful design. Studio Wok has masterfully reimagined a derelict industrial structure, breathing new life into it as a dynamic and adaptable space. The project seamlessly weaves together historical elements and contemporary aesthetics, resulting in a unique and inspiring environment.

Studio Wok’s innovative approach isn’t limited to industrial conversions. They’ve also lent their creative talents to other projects, including Pan, a popular bakery in Milan.
