The Modern Dog-Trot: Baldridge Architects’ Roam Ranch in Texas

Roam Ranch, designed by Baldridge Architects, reinterprets the classic dog-trot house

Casey Dunn

Nestled within the rolling landscape of Fredericksburg, Texas, Roam Ranch stands as a compelling dialogue between modern design and the enduring spirit of the Texan ranch. Designed by Baldridge Architects, this 4,362-square-foot single-family home is more than just a residence; it’s a working hub for Force of Nature, a sustainable bison and turkey ranch, owned by clients who sought refuge from city life during the pandemic. Having previously collaborated with Baldridge Architects on a modern Austin home, the clients returned, this time with a vision for a dwelling that honored its rural context while accommodating both their family and their business.

The challenge presented to the architects was multifaceted. The clients were committed to retaining two existing structures—a kitchen/dining building and a separate bedroom volume—while integrating them into a larger, cohesive design that could also host podcasts and educational events. Furthermore, the construction process had to accommodate the clients’ continued occupancy of the site, a complex logistical undertaking compounded by the presence of a newborn.

Baldridge Architects responded with a design that masterfully blends contemporary sensibilities with the vernacular language of Central Texas. The resulting form is a modern interpretation of the classic dog-trot house, a traditional regional typology characterized by two separate living spaces connected by a covered breezeway. At Roam Ranch, this concept is reimagined as a series of interconnected volumes—bedrooms, carport, kitchen, offices, great room, and gym—unified under a single, overarching roof.

A key element of this design is the strategic use of materials. New corrugated polycarbonate roofing, carefully chosen to match the existing roof of the retained structures, creates a striking entry and carport area. This translucent material not only provides shelter but also floods the adjacent spaces with natural light, seamlessly integrating the old and new. The polycarbonate, combined with the existing structures, forms the heart of the “dog-trot,” creating a focal point that is both functional and aesthetically compelling.

The ingenuity of the plan extends beyond its overall form. The architects meticulously considered the practical implications of constructing a home while the clients remained in residence. This constraint, far from being a hindrance, became a catalyst for innovative solutions. The design was conceived not only as a finished product but also as a phased process, ensuring minimal disruption to the clients’ daily life. Remarkably, the final structure bears no visible trace of these logistical complexities; it stands as a fully resolved and cohesive whole.

This meticulous attention to detail is evident in the project’s finer moments. The raw stone hearth, for instance, seamlessly integrates with the floor, separated only by a delicate 1/4” reveal. This subtle detail exemplifies the architects’ commitment to precision and craft. Similarly, the flitched wood and steel structure, while providing essential support for the compound cantilevers, remains discreetly concealed, showcasing the architects’ deft handling of structural challenges.

Baldridge Architects’ approach to Roam Ranch demonstrates the power of contextual design. By embracing the vernacular traditions of Central Texas and creatively responding to site constraints and client needs, they have created a home that is both strikingly contemporary and deeply rooted in its place.
