Nestled along the expansive shores of Lake Saint-Jean in Quebec, The Cache, a collaborative project by Delordinaire Architects and Annie Sylvain Architects, stands as an example of the power of thoughtful design in fostering a deeper connection with nature. This signature project builds upon Delordinaire’s ongoing exploration of residential typologies, evolving from their innovative stilt house concept first introduced with High House in 2020.
The Cache presents a modular system designed for seamless integration with the surrounding vegetation. Embracing the stilt typology, the structures minimize their footprint, requiring minimal foundation work and preserving the natural topography. This elevated design creates a protected outdoor space beneath the houses, ideal for warmer months, while simultaneously offering unique, elevated perspectives from within.
Central to Delordinaire’s architectural philosophy is the blurring of lines between interior and exterior spaces, which fosters a genuinely immersive experience within the landscape. The Cache accomplishes this through thoughtfully designed viewpoints and an intimate, secluded environment.
These remarkable 50 m² dwellings, enveloped in meticulously crafted larch, are distinguished by their clean lines and striking geometric forms. Prefabricated north of Montreal and subsequently assembled on site, they exemplify a sophisticated reinterpretation of living in harmony with nature.
“Through our creations, we aim to offer more than a functional habitat,” states Delordinaire Architects. “It is a way of living, contemplative moments suspended in time. The heart of our architectural approach is about creating spaces that ‘resonate’: encouraging mindfulness, connection, and sensitivity.”
Each Cache unit is thoughtfully tailored to its specific location. Height and orientation are carefully calibrated to optimize architectural elements such as natural light and views. The living area, the heart of each dwelling, features a large bay window, flooding the space with natural light and opening wide to the horizon, effectively dissolving the boundary between inside and out. This design elevates daily life, inviting occupants into an intimate communion with the breathtaking scenery of the lake.
The thoughtful incorporation of natural materials, meticulous proportions, and strategically positioned openings significantly enhances the dynamic relationship between inhabitants and their surrounding environment. The Cache transcends the basic function of providing shelter, evolving into a sanctuary of tranquility where architecture serves as a conduit between individuals and nature. This space is attuned to the rhythms of daily life, harmonizing with the ebb and flow of the lake, and is designed as a refuge for reflection and connection.
Delordinaire Architects, in collaboration with Annie Sylvain Architects, has created not merely a residence but an immersive experience—one that fosters a harmonious dialogue between architectural design and the breathtaking landscape of Lake Saint-Jean.
