This isn’t just a renovation; it’s proof to the power of adaptive reuse, a celebration of innovation, and a commitment to sustainability, all orchestrated by Cristiana Catino’s ACC Naturale Architettura and PlaC architecture urban design. The project breathes new life into a 1980s structure, creating a dynamic environment that fosters collaboration and reflects Podium’s forward-thinking ethos.
The challenge was significant: repurposing a 15-year-abandoned food industry building within the industrial heart of Pont Saint Martin. The design teams embraced the existing structure’s inherent strengths – its generous interior spaces, panoramic valley views, and expansive glass entrance – while completely reimagining the interiors to meet the complex needs of a modern engineering company specializing in motorsport and hybrid-electric mobility. “The project stands out for its ability to adapt an existing building to the future needs of an innovative company, creating flexible and evolving spaces,” the designers explain. “The new headquarters exemplifies how architecture can act as a catalyst for change, making work more productive and inspiring. Here, architecture facilitates interaction, the transfer of ideas, and the communication of values.”
This transformation is more than cosmetic. It’s a strategic design that supports Podium’s relocation and embodies its core values. Through meticulous analysis and engagement with various teams, the architects crafted a spatial organization that seamlessly integrates production lines, assembly areas for motorsport engines and vehicles, and collaborative workspaces. The building’s layout fosters interaction and idea-sharing, striking a delicate balance between expansive communal zones and dedicated private spaces. Flexibility is paramount; every area is designed to adapt to the company’s future growth and evolving needs.
The building’s heart is a luminous glass atrium, a central hub for circulation and a natural meeting point connecting diverse departments. A striking multifunctional stepped seating area within the atrium can accommodate up to 35 people, providing a venue for corporate events and informal gatherings. The two office floors feature open collaborative spaces delineated by large glass panels, maintaining visual connection and promoting adaptability. Meeting rooms and individual workspaces seamlessly connect with these open areas, offering a spectrum of options for focused work and spontaneous interactions in lounges, break areas, and private phone booths. Operational workstations are strategically positioned to optimize workflows and encourage team communication. A versatile 120-seat training room, divisible by large sliding walls, caters to a range of activities and acoustic requirements.
The production areas, housed in separate wings, have undergone a complete overhaul, prioritizing efficient workflows. Informal spaces, offices, and meeting rooms are integrated within these areas to promote collaboration across different employee groups. Elevated mezzanines in the battery production and assembly areas provide comprehensive oversight of operations. Areas requiring confidentiality can be easily secured.
Sustainability is woven into the fabric of the building. From the outset, an integrated approach was adopted to maximize energy efficiency, ensure acoustic and environmental comfort, and implement Active Design strategies to minimize the reliance on heating, cooling, and artificial lighting. Natural light, hybrid ventilation, and soundproof flooring contribute to employee well-being. Materials were selected for their low environmental impact, while indoor greenery and noise-reducing floors enhance the comfortable work environment.
The building’s connection to its natural surroundings is palpable. New openings and expansive glass windows frame breathtaking views of the Aosta Valley, creating both visual and functional links to the outdoors. The 5,000 square meters of outdoor space, including 2,000 square meters of preserved native greenery, enhances environmental comfort and provides spaces for relaxation and social interaction. The inclusion of electric vehicle and bike charging stations underscores the project’s commitment to environmental stewardship.
Even the material palette contributes to the narrative. Large glass windows and brushed steel finishes reflect Podium’s technological prowess. The carefully chosen color scheme – a play of white, dark gray, and blue – unifies existing and new elements. White emphasizes the precision and cleanliness of production processes, dark gray adds depth, and blue symbolizes calmness, clarity, and Podium’s commitment to energy innovation in the automotive sector. Consistent graphics across various media reinforce brand identity, improve communication, and enhance wayfinding within the headquarters.
