Aluminium Apex: Carmody Groarke Crowns Covent Garden House with a Monolithic Sky-Form

Covent Garden Penthouse: Carmody Groarke's Aluminium Apex

Nestled within the historic heart of London, a nineteenth-century Grade II Listed merchant’s house has been reborn, crowned with a striking aluminium pavilion that redefines urban penthouse living. Carmody Groarke‘s meticulous renovation of this Covent Garden gem transforms a traditional structure into a contemporary haven, seamlessly blending historical reverence with bold, modern intervention.

The project centers around a duplex penthouse apartment, where the top two floors have been thoughtfully reimagined to create a bespoke living space for a modern family. The journey begins on the lower level, where a warm and inviting atmosphere is established through the extensive use of walnut-panelled joinery. This rich, tactile material lines the entrance lobby and bedrooms, creating a sense of intimacy and comfort, a retreat from the bustling city below.

Ascending to the upper floor, the atmosphere shifts dramatically. Here, the generous open-plan living area capitalizes on the loft space’s inherent advantages: soaring ceilings and breathtaking panoramic views of Covent Garden Market. Large, strategically placed skylights, nestled between the original roof trusses, flood the space with natural light, breathing life into the interior and connecting it to the sky above.

However, the true architectural coup lies in the rear of the landlocked site. Carmody Groarke has introduced a new rooftop pavilion, a gleaming, contemporary extension that significantly expands the living space. This pavilion, housing a sleek, modern kitchen and a sheltered roof terrace, takes the familiar form of a pitched roof extension, but with a radical twist.

Rather than adhering to traditional construction methods, the pavilion is crafted from 25mm-thick solid-plate sanded aluminium. This material choice abstracts the form, creating a striking contrast with the weighty appearance of the existing London stock-brick annexe upon which it rests. The monolithic plates of sheet metal appear to be balanced in a state of structural equilibrium, giving the pavilion an almost ethereal quality.

The result is a unique, elemental presence on the city skyline. The pavilion’s silhouette, defined by its clean lines and reflective surface, stands as a testament to the power of contemporary design to transform and elevate historical structures. The use of aluminium, a material known for its lightness and strength, allows the pavilion to appear as if it is floating, a delicate yet powerful addition to the building.

Carmody Groarke’s Covent Garden House is more than just a renovation; it’s a dialogue between past and present. The project demonstrates how thoughtful architectural intervention can breathe new life into historic buildings, creating contemporary living spaces that are both functional and visually stunning. The aluminium pavilion, a beacon of modern design, not only expands the living space but also adds a unique and memorable chapter to the building’s storied history. It’s a testament to the power of architecture to create a striking and harmonious blend of old and new, a shining example of urban renewal at its finest.
