Nestled within the historic tree-lined streets of Fort Greene, Brooklyn, a once-challenging four-story townhouse has been masterfully transformed into a serene, light-filled family home. Undertaken by the acclaimed Barker Architecture Office, the Adelphi Townhouse project deftly navigated significant structural hurdles and awkward spatial relationships to create a residence perfectly tailored for a family of four, blending contemporary sensibilities with warm, textural richness.

The clients, anticipating considerable work, faced an unnavigable stair and a noticeably bulging rear wall. A key intervention involved redistributing space between the uneven floors – a common issue in townhouses of its era where the second floor originally boasted higher ceilings than the first. Barker Architecture Office seized this opportunity to reimagine the flow and functionality entirely.

Guided by a sophisticated yet understated neutral palette of white tones and white oak elements, the design finds its distinct character through exceptional texture and materiality. Eschewing traditional moldings and paneling, detail comes from thoughtfully selected surfaces: the rhythmic lines of tambour oak millwork, the soft diffusion of reeded glass, the organic feel of textured plaster, and the timeless speckle of terrazzo surfacing. Strategic bursts of color – washes of yellow and subtle touches of blue – punctuate this calm backdrop.

Functionality for family life was paramount. The entry, lined in blue and white patterned tile, was sized to accommodate strollers, featuring a custom bench and cabinet for practical storage. Upstairs, the parlor floor layout was deliberately kept open plan, facilitating easy supervision of young children. Custom built-in millwork and carefully chosen freestanding millwork pieces provide both visual continuity and abundant storage, unifying the living spaces. The living room fireplace is gracefully flanked by built-in shelves, while a custom sideboard seamlessly abuts the dining table.

In the kitchen, a strategic decision to raise the floor at the rear maximized ceiling height, enhancing the sense of space and drawing light towards the garden. This bright hub features elegant arabescato antico marble countertops and a built-in upholstered banquette paired with a terrazzo table. The space is animated by a vibrant yellow plastered wall and framed by expansive steel windows offering verdant garden views, complemented by a sophisticated reeded glass and oak cabinet.

The second floor was meticulously configured as a tranquil primary suite. A steel bedroom window wall opens onto a private terrace, extending the living space outdoors. Thoughtful details include a custom corner desk catering to modern work from home needs. The luxurious plaster-finished bathroom presents a unique blend of comfort and charm, featuring a working fireplace, a graceful freestanding tub, and an inviting arched steam shower.

The top floor is dedicated entirely to the children. Their rooms feature whimsical ceilings surfaced with graphic bird and cloud wallpaper, finished with painted trim color-matched for cohesion. The skylit bathroom provides a playful yet chic atmosphere, wrapped in yellow and white patterned cement tile. Throughout the vertical journey, the renovated stair is illuminated by a sculptural sculptural sconce from the esteemed Lambert et Fils, acting as a functional art piece.

The Adelphi Townhouse by Barker Architecture Office stands as a testament to intelligent Brooklyn townhouse renovation. It successfully balances rigorous problem-solving with a deeply tactile and visually warm approach, creating a family home that is both highly functional and an oasis of refined, contemporary calm in the heart of the city. The project exemplifies how thoughtful materiality – textured plaster, terrazzo surfacing, white oak elements, and strategic color – can define a truly special modern interior.
