Seoul, a city pulsating with dynamism, is undergoing a transformation in its approach to urban living. UNStudio, in collaboration with Samsung C&T Corporation, has unveiled the Hannamdong-4 Residences, a groundbreaking project that seamlessly blends biophilic design, innovative technology, and community-focused spaces. This ambitious development not only redefines the Seoul skyline but also sets a new benchmark for sustainable and harmonious urban living.
As Ben van Berkel, founder and principal architect of UNStudio, eloquently states, “Hannamdong-4 Residences is an incredibly exciting project because it represents a new benchmark for urban living in Seoul… It’s about shaping a future where people, community, and the environment thrive together.”

Seoul’s rapid urbanization has, in some ways, created a disconnect between the natural elements that define the city: the majestic Namsan Mountain and the flowing Han River. UNStudio’s design addresses this urban challenge head-on, creating a “Biophilic Nexus” that reconnects residents with nature and the city’s rich history.
The development comprises a series of strategically positioned towers: O-shaped structures facing the Han River, and X-shaped and L-shaped towers nestled along Bogwang-ro, leading towards Namsan Mountain. This careful placement not only maximizes views but also creates a dynamic interplay between the built environment and the natural landscape.
The design draws inspiration from potent symbols of Korean heritage: the white pine, a once-rare tree now flourishing in Seoul, and the elegant waterlily, emblematic of the Han River. These natural elements are not merely decorative motifs; they inform the very fabric of the building facades.

The X-shaped towers feature intricate facade patterns that mimic the texture and form of white pine trees. Vertical elements, reminiscent of trunks and branches, extend from the podium level, creating balconies with breathtaking river views, and continue upwards, framing each tower.
The O-shaped towers, with their innovative, patented spiral design, showcase rotating waterlily modules arranged around a central green spine. These modules, inspired by petals, create a fluid and expressive articulation, lending a sense of movement to the structures. The L-shaped towers act as a powerful backdrop, with their design drawing inspiration from both pine trees (on the rear side) and waterlilies (on the front).
This biophilic approach creates a visually stunning and environmentally conscious exterior, reflecting the project’s core commitment to integrating urban living with natural beauty.
Beyond its striking aesthetics, Hannamdong-4 Residences prioritizes the well-being and adaptability of its residents. Flexible interior layouts allow for customization to accommodate diverse lifestyles and evolving family needs. This forward-thinking approach ensures that the development remains relevant and functional for generations to come.
The project also fosters a strong sense of community through expansive shared spaces and lush landscaping. A community center with 360-degree panoramic views serves as a central gathering point. The “Highline 365,” a 365-meter-long elevated walkway with jogging tracks and year-round gardens, provides a unique recreational space for residents and the wider community. Furthermore, Samsung C&T Corporation plans to establish five parks across the development, significantly expanding the green spaces available to residents.
Sustainability is not an afterthought but a fundamental principle of the Hannamdong-4 Residences. Green terraces enhance air quality and promote biodiversity. Advanced water management systems, including rainwater harvesting and permeable paving, minimize environmental impact. Energy-efficient technologies, solar panels, and renewable energy solutions further reduce the development’s carbon footprint.
By prioritizing green spaces, resource efficiency, and renewable energy, UNStudio and Samsung C&T Corporation are creating a healthier and more sustainable living environment, fostering a harmonious relationship between the urban landscape and the natural world.
Hannamdong-4 Residences is more than just a residential development; it is a vision for the future of urban living. By seamlessly integrating biophilic design, innovative technology, and a strong community focus, this project sets a new standard for sustainable and harmonious urban environments, offering a compelling glimpse into the future of our cities.
