Aesop‘s latest Parisian outpost on Avenue des Ternes embodies a harmonious blend of contemporary design and historical preservation. Led by long-time collaborator Jakob Sprenger, the project seamlessly integrates four 19th-century ceiling medallions – remnants of the demolished Hôtel de la Guillonnière – into the boutique’s interior. This thoughtful approach results in a unique and captivating retail experience that exudes understated elegance.
The cornerstone of the design lies in the unexpected discovery of four nineteenth-century ceiling medallions. Unearthed during the renovation, these exquisite artifacts, once part of the opulent Hôtel de la Guillonnière, were meticulously restored and reintegrated into the boutique’s interior. This unexpected historical encounter imbued the space with a sense of pre-ordained destiny, as if the store was always meant to occupy this particular site.
The design philosophy reflects the tranquil residential character of the surrounding neighborhood. Saturated hues and soft, rounded forms create an atmosphere that encourages visitors to slow down and savor the moment. Generous bay windows flood the space with natural light, while comfortable seating invites customers to relax and enjoy the Parisian streetscape.
The boutique thoughtfully divides the space into distinct zones: a Fragrance Armoire showcasing Aesop’s unique Eaux de Parfum, a dedicated basin for personalized consultations, and a central gathering point around a sculptural basin where customers can explore the full range of products. Reclaimed tomettes, with their inherent imperfections, add a touch of rustic charm and ground the space with a sense of history.
