Ánimo! Restaurant: Jordana Maisie's Vibrant Ode to Mexican Mornings

Midtown Manhattan welcomes Ánimo!, a new Mexican restaurant breathing fresh life into breakfast and lunch classics. Specializing in reimagined dishes like huevos rancheros and chilaquiles, Ánimo! offers a culinary journey that honors tradition while embracing contemporary design. The restaurant’s vibrant and textured interior, conceived by multidisciplinary artist and designer Jordana Maisie, is as much a feast for the eyes as the food is for the palate.

Maisie’s design delves deep into the heart of Mexican morning rituals, drawing inspiration from communal breakfasts, the preparation of traditional foods like tamales and hot chocolate, and the essential role of coffee in daily life. “Looking at the long-established tradition of communal breakfasts… encouraged my team and I to lean into a design sensibility that optimized flow and generosity,” explains Maisie. This ethos is evident in the restaurant’s layout and material choices.

The compact, street-level space unfolds around a central point of sale and baked goods display, fostering social interaction and a sense of collaborative cooking. A curvilinear terrazzo countertop flows seamlessly into tile-clad banquettes, complemented by custom tabletops crafted from natural sapele hardwood. The color palette, inspired by Mexican landscapes, pottery, and textiles, infuses the space with warmth and a sense of community, blending vibrant hues with earthy tones.

Maisie’s design skillfully balances traditional craftsmanship with contemporary aesthetics. Handmade ceramics, reflecting time-honored techniques, are juxtaposed with sleek, brushed aluminum surfaces that play with light throughout the interior. “It was important for us to maximize natural light to create a warm atmosphere, echoing the early morning sun,” says Maisie. Operable bay windows in each nook filter daylight, provide natural ventilation, and maintain visual connection to the bustling streetscape.

A striking feature of Ánimo! is its reclad exterior, a rarity in New York City. This bold move was crucial in establishing the restaurant’s presence and solidifying its brand identity. “In New York City, the focus on the interior often overshadows the façade,” notes Maisie, “but a corner condition in NYC is rare, and we felt the intersection of Second Avenue and 53rd Street wanted to disrupt the typical uniform flat, painted or aluminum-clad storefronts that line the avenues.” The fluted façade, echoing the convex and geometric patterns found within, creates a compelling dialogue between the interior and the street.

The design of Ánimo! is a testament to the power of blending tradition and innovation. “Throughout the project, we balanced tradition with contemporary design by incorporating sleek lines and modern amenities, ensuring the space feels relevant to today’s lifestyle while honoring its roots,” concludes Maisie. From the clean lines of the contemporary furniture to the vibrant murals that pay homage to Mexico’s rich cultural heritage, every detail invites diners on a journey of discovery with each visit, making Ánimo! more than just a restaurant, but a vibrant celebration of Mexican culture and culinary artistry.
