In Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, APPAREIL Architecture has transformed a generic prefabricated house into the Pied-de-vent Residence—a luminous sanctuary for a growing family. Defying demolition trends, this renovation preserves the existing structure while weaving contemporary elegance and natural light into its core, creating a serene dialogue with its surroundings.

Tasked with adapting the three-level home, APPAREIL restructured spaces without rebuilding. The ground floor now features two bedrooms and open-plan living areas for gatherings, while the second floor houses a primary suite. The unfinished basement was reconfigured for flexibility, and a new double garage—absent originally—was seamlessly integrated. Relocating the staircase to the front enhanced flow and buffered street noise.

Natural light defines the project’s soul. Strategically, skylights and rear windows flood interiors with sun, while a near-blind front façade ensures privacy. The original staircase’s retained skylight showers light into the home’s heart, with vertical openings between floors adding sculptural depth. Homeowner Mélanie affirms: “Sunlight finds its way into every room at all hours,” embodying the name “pied-de-vent” (rays piercing clouds).

Materiality amplifies tranquility. Mineral-textured tiles, greige tones, and warm wood craft a calming cocoon. Built-in furniture by APPAREIL—like a millwork block hiding a powder room and staircase storage doubling as bookshelves—unifies spaces with minimalist precision.

Externally, varying-width wooden slats visually lighten the garage mass. Soft beige cladding echoes the interior’s hushed ambiance, while the backyard—designed as a leafy refuge—features a summer kitchen and veranda embracing Québec’s seasons.

This project champions sustainable transformation over demolition. Collaborating with contractor Modulor, APPAREIL revitalized the structure with meticulous details, proving existing homes can gain new life.

The Pied-de-vent Residence stands as a testament to architectural transformation—elevating everyday living through light, adaptability, and reverence for place. A beacon of poetic renovation in Montreal’s design landscape.
