It’s Oh So Quiet: A Symphony of Hay and Mountains in the Romanian Landscape

ATELIER VRAC's "It's oh so quiet" is a temporary installation in Romania's Făgăraș Mountains

In the heart of the Făgăraș Mountains, where the air is crisp and the landscape breathtaking, ATELIER VRAC has crafted a temporary installation that whispers rather than shouts. “It’s oh so quiet,” conceived for the Făgăraș Fest in Sebeșu de Sus, Romania, is more than just a structure; it’s an experience, a bridge between the vibrant energy of the festival and the serene majesty of its natural surroundings. Winning the Conservation Carpathia ideas competition, the project embodies a sensitive approach to design, prioritizing both environmental consciousness and community engagement.

The competition brief challenged participants to address the critical need for conservation in this unique environment, emphasizing the responsible use of local, natural resources. ATELIER VRAC responded with an installation that seamlessly integrates into the landscape, acting as an organic extension of the terrain rather than an imposition upon it. Positioned slightly apart from the main festival hub, “It’s oh so quiet” offers a haven for reflection, a space for contemplation amidst the festivities.

The installation’s dual nature is immediately apparent. The exterior presents a solid, rhythmic façade, a protective threshold that creates a sense of enclosure and quietude. This structured exterior contrasts sharply with the organic, amphitheater-like interior, a welcoming space oriented towards the dramatic panorama of the Făgăraș Mountains. This carefully orchestrated duality fosters a sense of anticipation, inviting visitors to leave the bustle behind and engage with the landscape in a more profound way.

The materiality of “It’s oh so quiet” speaks to its sustainable ethos. Hay bales, readily available and easily manipulated, form the stepped structure of the amphitheater. These modular elements create a soft, textured surface, inviting visitors to sit, recline, or simply pause and absorb their surroundings. Supporting this hay bale framework are structures crafted from locally sourced wood, further reinforcing the project’s connection to its context. Even the lighting scheme is considered, with solar-powered luminous spheres gently illuminating the installation at night, adding a subtle touch of magic to the nocturnal landscape.

Over the course of the Făgăraș Fest, “It’s oh so quiet” transcended its initial purpose as a space for contemplation. It became a dynamic hub, a focal point for festival-goers. The tiered seating provided a comfortable venue for informal gatherings, while the shaded areas offered respite from the summer sun. Children explored its contours with playful curiosity, while adults engaged in intimate conversations under the starlit sky. The installation adapted to the rhythms of the festival, becoming a canvas for spontaneous interactions and shared experiences.

ATELIER VRAC’s vision goes beyond the festival’s immediate duration. They foresee that the hay bales will gradually decompose, enriching the earth with their organic matter. In contrast, the wooden structure will endure, serving as a lasting symbol of the project’s dedication to sustainable design and its ongoing relationship with the landscape. “It’s oh so quiet” is more than just a temporary installation; it stands as a reminder of architecture’s ability to foster spaces for reflection, connection, and a deeper appreciation of nature. It’s a serene symphony crafted from hay and wood, set against the stunning backdrop of the Făgăraș Mountains.
