In the heart of Guiyang, China, where rugged mountains cradle the city, Atelier Xi has orchestrated a lyrical dialogue between land and structure at the AYDC Public Art Center. Translating to “our land of dreams” from the Yi language, AYDC (A Yun Duo Cang) transcends conventional cultural hubs, serving as a culture-driven experimental hub integrating community expression, innovation, and nature within Guizhou’s mountainous landscape.

Eschewing a singular building, the architects dispersed a constellation of three sculptural pavilions—Xima Library, Ginkgo Chapel, and Dali Stage—across the vibrant landscape. This disaggregated approach creates a porous architecture network of flexible and diverse platforms where the local art community can independently gather and spontaneously create, embedded within the natural landscape.

Profoundly inspired by Guizhou’s dramatic karst mountain caves, each pavilion emerges as a geological artifact seemingly carved by elemental forces of space and light. They embody “sculpted voids,” defined by suspended, pointed arches that express a delicate structural balance between tension and weight, forming the core visual and structural language of the AYDC Public Art Center.

Materiality reinforces this connection. The outer facades are composed of modular travertine panels, their porous white surface allowing wind and dappled light to flow freely. Within, curved stainless-steel plates form luminous inner shells, their textures meticulously tailored: sandblasted for softness in the library and chapel, mirror-polished for dynamic reflection in the stage, enhancing the immersive experience.

Beside a rippling pond, the Xima Library stands anchored against a vibrant tapestry of seasonal ginkgo foliage. Its rectilinear travertine form encases a radiant metallic dome, casting moon-like silhouettes onto the water, resonating with the element of water and creating a space for quiet reflection within the public art complex.

Uphill, nestled among trees, the Ginkgo Chapel floats poetically atop four colossal stone “leaves.” Visitors slip through a narrow gap between its dual curved metallic volumes to encounter the central void, looking upward to shifting skies and listening to the wind rustle through leaves—a sanctuary for meditation open to the open sky.

Facing a public square, the Dali Stage activates the complex. Sculpted by the negative imprint of an arch, it opens like a natural amphitheater. Fiber-optic lights embedded beneath its floor evoke constellations underfoot, transforming performances into celestial events that resonate with twinkling starlight, making it a dazzling focal point.

As seasons turn, the surrounding ginkgo forest cycles through vibrant emerald, gold, and amber shades. This ever-changing natural landscape harmonizes dynamically with the travertine panels and reflective stainless-steel plates of the pavilions, creating a continuously evolving immersive experience where architecture and nature perform in concert.

Through these minimal architectural gestures, Atelier Xi amplifies the site’s innate vitality. The AYDC Public Art Center masterfully weaves together built form, natural landscape, and local cultural memory. It redefines the role of architecture as a vessel for community expression, artistic imagination, and profound experience within our land of dreams.
