A Quiet Revolution: Barnsbury House and the Kettle’s Yard Spirit

Barnsbury House: A Kettle's Yard Inspired Georgian Renovation | Architecture for London

Nick Dearden | Building Narratives

“Rooms snug and light—not overlarge but neat…Where everything looks elegant and chaste…” The words, plucked from Penelope Lively’s “Travels Through an Unwrecked Landscape,” resonate deeply within the newly revitalized walls of Barnsbury House. Architecture for London, tasked with breathing new life into this Grade II listed Georgian gem, have crafted a space that is both reverent to its historical context and strikingly contemporary. More than a mere renovation, this project is a nuanced conversation between eras, a delicate dance of light, texture, and curated simplicity.

The clients, an art historian and a museum curator, brought a unique sensibility to the table, a desire for interiors that harmonized the classic with the contemporary. Their vision, subtly informed by Jim Ede’s transformative approach at Kettle’s Yard, sought to create a home that was both a sanctuary and a stage for life’s many acts: entertaining, family gatherings, quiet contemplation.

The most dramatic transformation occurred on the lower ground floor, once a dimly lit labyrinth. Architecture for London deftly dismantled the convoluted kitchen layout, ushering in a flood of natural light. The result is a multi-functional family space, grounded by brick tile floors—a direct nod to the earthy elegance of Kettle’s Yard. The exposed, soot-stained fireplaces, previously hidden, now stand as proud testaments to the building’s history, their raw beauty amplified by the exposed original timber joists overhead.

The bespoke kitchen, a masterclass in understated luxury, features Carrara marble work surfaces that exude a timeless elegance. English oak cabinetry, with its textured sawn finish, adds a touch of rustic warmth, while the heritage red painted timber lining the internal carcasses provides a delightful, unexpected pop of color. The original vaults, previously relegated to obscurity, have been cleverly repurposed as top-lit storage and utility areas, maximizing every inch of space. A modest side addition now houses a shower room and pantry, seamlessly integrated into the existing structure.

The rear conservatory, a relic of a less refined era, has been replaced with a sleek, metal-framed extension, a transparent veil that blurs the lines between interior and garden. In the mezzanine level study, bespoke joinery creates a harmonious blend of functionality and aesthetic appeal. A built-in desk provides a dedicated workspace, while a concealed bed ensures comfortable accommodation for guests. The bay window, framed by a welcoming window seat, offers tranquil views of the garden, inviting moments of quiet reflection.

Throughout the project, a commitment to sustainability is evident in the thoughtful selection of materials. Reclaimed stone graces the rear patio, while reclaimed bricks form the new side wall, adding a layer of historical depth and minimizing environmental impact. The original rear outrigger has been meticulously insulated internally, a testament to the architects’ dedication to enhancing the building’s thermal performance without compromising its historical integrity.
