Perched on Seattle’s Lake Union, where the city meets the water, GO’C Studio has crafted a remarkable feat of ingenuity: the Blatto Boat. This Floating On Water Residence (FOWR) transcends the typical houseboat design, transforming the constrained shell of an existing 12’x40’ vessel into a sophisticated, multi-level home that masterfully unpacks the complexities of tiny living within a challenging steel hull.

Constrained by the existing boat’s over-water footprint, the project demanded a three-dimensional puzzle approach from inception. Collaborating closely with a nautical engineer, GO’C meticulously navigated vertical constraints, hull limitations, and precise ballasting requirements. The result is a design where every element, much like a ship’s cabin, is fully considered and integrated, maximizing functionality without sacrificing aesthetic appeal.

The 4’ tall steel hull positions the main living level partially below the water line, a strategic move lowering the center of gravity for stability. Entry adapts seasonally with the lake’s 2’ fluctuation, shifting from level access to requiring temporary stairs on the finger dock. Inside, the spatial intelligence shines immediately. A central staircase elegantly wraps around the main level bathroom, creating essential entry storage below and bedroom storage above – a testament to careful planning in this critical “knuckle” of the home, opting for a proper staircase over a mere ladder despite the tight space.

The main level unfolds with an L-shaped kitchen, offering ample prep and storage for a home-cooking enthusiast. Custom white oak cabinetry flows seamlessly into a built-in seating area adjacent to sliding doors opening onto the main deck. A moveable central island epitomizes double-duty design, transforming effortlessly from kitchen prep surface to dining table to work desk. Ingeniously, extended window sills double as bookshelves, a recurring theme of multifunctionality.

Upstairs, the bedroom continues the language of bespoke joinery, integrating closets and bedside tables. Large sliders open to a generous roof deck, perfect for entertaining and accessible via ladder from the main deck for guest privacy. A further ladder ascends to a secluded upper roof deck, envisioned for planters enabling homegrown produce while framing stunning views of the Seattle skyline.

Addressing the challenge of light and privacy amidst neighboring tall houseboats, GO’C employed clerestory windows throughout the main level, bathing the interior in natural light without compromising seclusion. A strategically placed skylight over the living area ensures light penetrates deep into the home’s core.

The Blatto Boat stands as a beacon of intelligent, sustainable design within the urban waterwaycontext. GO’C Studio has proven that extreme spatial constraints can birth extraordinary living solutions, blending meticulous marine engineering with warm, custom craftsmanship and smart home functionality. It’s not just a residence on water; it’s a masterclass in compact, elevated floating residence design.
