Blur Architects have recently completed an extension to a South Yarra residence, Melbourne, seamlessly blending contemporary design with the character of its established surroundings. The project, dubbed “David,” responds to the client’s desire for a home that reflects their unique lifestyle and seamlessly integrates with the varied architectural landscape of the area.

The new wing, clad entirely in weathered copper, establishes a subtle yet distinct presence on the street. This material, alongside glass, steel, bluestone pavers, and off-form concrete, reflects a commitment to natural materials that express their own unique character and patina over time.

The heart of the project is an elevated lap pool, a key element of the client’s brief. This striking black mosaic pool punctuates the building, with all spaces thoughtfully converging towards it. The surrounding landscape, designed by Myles Baldwin, deliberately blurs the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces, framing the building and creating a sense of fluidity.

A series of elegant curves define the building’s form, serving both aesthetic and functional purposes. These curves not only soften the building’s silhouette but also facilitate the gentle shedding of rainwater, eliminating the need for gutters. This curvilinear language is echoed internally, creating a sense of spaciousness and softening the edges of the rooms.

A highlight of the project is the glass corridor connecting the new wing to the existing house. “The glass walkway serves as an umbilical cord, bridging old and new and allowing northern light to penetrate the original house,” explains architect Khalid Bouden. “Beyond mere circulation, the crazy paving creates a liminal space between indoors and outdoors.” Unexpectedly, the owners have discovered a new favorite spot in this space, bringing in beanbags to create a relaxing pause they hadn’t initially envisioned.

The western façade features louvers that respond to the changing weather, allowing the owners to control sunlight and privacy while creating subtle variations in the building’s appearance throughout the day. The home is also equipped with a smart home system, integrating blinds, lighting, and security for the utmost comfort and convenience.

The “David” project by Blur Architects is a testament to thoughtful design that seamlessly integrates with its surroundings while creating a unique and personal living experience for its inhabitants. It demonstrates a masterful use of materials, a focus on user experience, and a deep understanding of the client’s needs and desires.
