Université Mohammed VI Polytechnique (UM6P), Morocco’s dynamic hub for innovation, unveiled its architectural cornerstone last autumn: the Centre de Congrès Rabat. Designed by Bofill Taller de Arquitectura, this landmark conference centre anchors the university’s second campus in Rabat.

As the inaugural phase of UM6P’s expansion, the building transcends conventional event space. The brief demanded a structure shaping the campus identity while enhancing daily life – a social catalyst where academia, industry, and public intersect through lectures, conferences, and performances.

Strategically positioned between development phases, the Centre de Congrès Rabat functions as an urban hinge. It stitches together the campus’ linear “arm” of buildings with a future condensed cluster, creating vital pedestrian flow between distinct zones.

This connective purpose manifests architecturally through rhythmic porticos framing the perimeter. A seamless material transition occurs here: identical bright tiles clad walls and pave walkways, flowing continuously from exterior patios into the building’s lobby. This blurring of thresholds invites organic movement.

Inside, Bofill Taller de Arquitectura pursues ‘total design’ philosophy. Every detail – from bespoke furniture design to tactile material selections – receives equal weight to the macro urban strategy, creating cohesive sensory experiences.

The architecture’s DNA lies in primal geometries: a perfect circle embraces a square. This conceptual clarity defines the entire plan, merging symbolic resonance with functional rigor.

A soaring freestanding circular wall forms the building’s iconic shell. Within its curve lies the heart: a grand square auditorium optimized for acoustics and visibility across diverse event formats.

The interstitial zone between circle and square buzzes with activity. This light-filled annular space houses adaptable smaller auditoriums, meeting rooms, cafes and bars, service cores, and circulation routes – all wrapped in curated materiality.

Exterior courtyards punctuate the perimeter, extending gathering spaces outdoors. Furnished with seating, these pockets foster informal exchange while framing views of playing fields and wooded landscapes beyond.

Dramatic grand arches pierce the circular facade, touching earth only at structural corners. These soaring openings create visual permeability and physical invitation, embodying the centre’s ethos: a dynamic, inclusive nexus for cross-disciplinary encounters.
Ultimately, the Centre de Congrès Rabat transcends its functional brief. Through geometric purity and spatial generosity, Bofill Taller de Arquitectura crafts a new contemporary architecture icon – one that actively shapes campus community while hosting Morocco’s evolving dialogues on education and innovation.
