In a thoughtful exploration of Catalan architectural heritage, Bouman arquitectura has created Casa Boratuna, a single-family residence in Vall del Llémena that prioritizes harmony with its natural context. This project is a study in understated elegance, drawing inspiration from the traditional masia to create a home that feels both timeless and deeply rooted in its place.

The driving force behind Casa Boratuna was a deep respect for the architectural heritage of Catalonia. Bouman arquitectura sought to create a building that felt organically integrated into the landscape, as if it had always been a part of the valley. This approach resulted in a design that prioritizes quiet integration over bold statements.

The house’s location on a series of existing cross terraces, oriented towards breathtaking valley views, further enhances this connection to the land. This terraced layout efficiently organizes the outdoor spaces, with the house occupying the widest terrace and the others dedicated to an orchard, pool, terrace, and parking.
Casa Boratuna’s design avoids architectural grandstanding, instead opting for a subtle and timeless aesthetic. The use of local stone and traditional wooden gabled roofs directly references the masia style, anchoring the house in the region’s history. These materials not only connect the building to its surroundings but also contribute to a sense of timelessness, as if the house has evolved alongside the land.
The interior layout is characterized by a compact, square floor plan. A central, transverse space serves as the heart of the home, encompassing the foyer, kitchen, living room, and dining area. This open-plan design fosters a sense of connection and flow. The bedrooms, bathroom, and laundry room are strategically positioned along the sides of this central space, with a bedroom occupying each corner.
Beyond its aesthetic appeal, Casa Boratuna is also a model of sustainable design. The house is highly insulated and utilizes an aerothermal heating and hot water system, approaching passive house standards and achieving remarkably low energy consumption. The compact form of the building further maximizes energy efficiency.
Casa Boratuna is more than just a house; it’s a harmonious addition to the Vall del Llémena landscape. By embracing vernacular traditions, prioritizing natural materials, and focusing on sustainability, Bouman studio has created a home that truly belongs. This project exemplifies how contemporary architecture can respectfully engage with history and nature, creating spaces that are both beautiful and functional.
