Céleste Boursier-Mougenot Transforms Paris’s Bourse de Commerce into a Dreamlike Soundscape with Clinamen

Céleste Boursier-Mougenot Transforms Paris’s Bourse de Commerce into a Dreamlike Soundscape with Clinamen

Nicolas Brasseur

The historic Bourse de Commerce—Pinault Collection in Paris has become an ethereal realm of sound, light, and reflection with French artist Céleste Boursier-Mougenot’s monumental installation, clinamen (v.8). Curated by Emma Lavigne, Chief Curator of the Pinault Collection, this immersive art experience redefines the museum’s neoclassical rotunda through a mesmerizing interplay of water, ceramics, and chance.

At the heart of the space floats an 18-meter-diameter basin filled with water, mirroring the dome’s oculus and the shifting sky above. Across this liquid canvas drift dozens of white ceramic bowls, propelled by gentle currents. As they glide and collide, the vessels emit delicate, unpredictable acoustic vibrations—a living, algorithmic symphony created without human performers. This sound art installation harnesses Epicurean physics (from which it takes its name, clinamen, meaning the “swerve” of atoms) to explore randomness, temporality, and coexistence.

Boursier-Mougenot—a former composer turned multisensory installation pioneer—liberates everyday objects from their mundane functions. Here, repurposed ceramic bowls transcend utility, becoming autonomous instruments that resonate with the Bourse de Commerce’s soaring architecture. Visitors are invited to wander the perimeter, losing themselves in a meditative environment where time feels suspended. The work evokes comparisons to Mark Rothko’s atmospheric depth and Monet’s water lilies, yet remains distinctly contemporary in its fusion of DIY ethos (inspired by punk and experimental music) and Fluxus-inspired détournement.

As Lavigne notes, the piece is “a culmination of a compositional process that generates its own form.” It reflects Boursier-Mougenot’s three-decade career challenging post-serial music conventions through site-specific installations that activate listening as a participatory act. His work has graced the Venice Biennale, Barbican Centre, and SFMoMA, but clinamen achieves new grandeur within this Parisian landmark.

Open now, the installation transforms the Pinault Collection into a sanctuary of serendipitous soundand reflection—a must-experiment for anyone seeking immersive art that blurs boundaries between nature, architecture, and human perception.

Céleste Boursier-Mougenot: clinamen runs at the Bourse de Commerce, Paris, through September 2025.
