Sculpting with Color: The “Mirage” Art of Emmanuelle Moureaux at Googleplex

Emmanuelle Moureaux's "Mirage" at Google HQ: A 100-Color Masterpiece

The Googleplex, Google’s Mountain View headquarters, has a striking new addition: a monumental artwork by Emmanuelle Moureaux. Titled “MIRAGE,” this installation, the 52nd in Moureaux’s ongoing “100 Colors” series, transforms the campus entrances into vibrant portals of color and possibility. Unveiled last month, after five years in the making, the 60-meter long artwork has quickly become a landmark, embodying the very essence of Google’s mission.

Moureaux, a Tokyo-based French architect, artist and designer, is renowned for her use of color and form to create immersive and thought-provoking environments. “MIRAGE” is no exception. Inspired by the mathematical concept of Googolplex – a 1 followed by 10 to the power of 100 zeros – the artwork uses an infinite layering of “0”s in 100 distinct colors to symbolize infinite possibilities. These vibrant hues, meticulously chosen, evoke joy, diversity, and unity, reflecting the spirit of Google itself.

The installation comprises three separate pieces, each strategically positioned at a different entrance to the Googleplex. The orientation of the “0”s within each piece has been carefully calculated to complement the surrounding architecture and landscape, creating a dynamic interplay of lines and forms. As visitors move around the campus, the “0”s appear and disappear, offering a constantly shifting perspective and a sense of discovery.

The symbolism of the zero is central to Moureaux’s concept. The void within the “0” represents the infinite potential that arises from emptiness, a blank canvas for new creation and innovation. This resonates deeply with Google’s own pursuit of groundbreaking ideas and its commitment to pushing the boundaries of technology.

“MIRAGE” isn’t just about visual spectacle; it’s about connection. Moureaux has designed the artwork to foster a sense of connection between people, nature, and the surrounding space. The floating lines of zeros create a welcoming atmosphere, a colorful “mirage” that bridges the gap between the physical and the conceptual. The artwork seamlessly integrates with the Googleplex landscape, becoming an integral part of the environment.

As part of Moureaux’s “100 Colors” series, “MIRAGE” is a powerful example of the ability of color to transform space and evoke emotion. Illuminated at night, the installation takes on a different character, with the 100 colors seemingly floating against the dark backdrop, creating a magical and ethereal effect. This duality, the contrasting appearances of the artwork during day and night, adds another layer of intrigue to the overall experience.

Moureaux’s artistic philosophy is deeply rooted in the belief that “Color is universal, borderless and infinite.” “MIRAGE” embodies this belief, serving as a powerful symbol of diversity, equality, and unity. The title itself suggests a dream, a colorful vision that Moureaux hopes will inspire those who encounter her work. It’s a dream of infinite possibilities, a mirage that shimmers with the promise of innovation and creativity, ultimately manifesting in the real world. “100 Colors no.52 ‘MIRAGE’ for Google” is more than just an art installation; it’s a vibrant expression of hope, a testament to the power of art to inspire and connect.
