Tucked away on the outskirts of Guildford, UK, with the rolling North Downs painting a serene backdrop, CASA BASSA stands as an example of innovative design and thoughtful adaptation. What was once a humble garage has been transformed by Francesco Pierazzi Architects (FPA) into a dynamic, multi-functional dwelling, a true hybrid space that seamlessly blends sustainability, craftsmanship, and a touch of futuristic inspiration.
The project began with a simple desire: the clients, having recently revitalized their contemporary villa and its gardens designed by Adolfo Harrison, sought a way to better accommodate friends and family. Instead of merely reconfiguring existing spaces, FPA proposed a bold, standalone structure, a vision that quickly evolved into something far more intriguing.
CASA BASSA is more than just an extension; it’s a dialogue between architecture and technology. Inspired by the clients’ expertise in artificial intelligence, FPA translated the binary language of AI algorithms into a tangible architectural rhythm. This “binary pattern” dictates the very fabric of the building, influencing material choices and spatial arrangements. Think of it: timber goalpost frames, zinc cladding, charred timber, and porcelain tiles, all meticulously arranged in a dance of solid and void, seam and field, creating a textural symphony that celebrates both technology and traditional craftsmanship.
Approaching CASA BASSA is an experience in itself. A sculptural set of steep steps, clad in vibrant green patterned tiles, guides you through the garden’s gentle slopes. These tiles act as a visual bridge, connecting the building to its verdant surroundings. The entrance, cleverly concealed within the timber cladding, adds a layer of intrigue, a hint of the surprises that lie within.
The original garage’s plinth was thoughtfully retained, preserving the existing footings and minimizing waste. Atop this foundation, a new mansard roof rises, its dynamic shape responding to the site’s topography, creating a varied silhouette from every angle.
The contrast between exterior and interior is striking. The dark, monolithic facade gives way to a bright, airy interior, bathed in natural light. This loft-like space, with its expansive picture windows, forges a strong connection with the surrounding landscape. Simple, standalone volumes for the kitchen and storage, which cleverly doubles as a bedhead, break down the open space, creating distinct zones without sacrificing the sense of flow.
