Lisbon’s iconic hills have long been navigated by a network of historic funiculars and elevators, from the famous Bica Elevator to the Glória Funicular. Now, Atelier Bugio has introduced a striking new addition to the city’s urban mobility landscape: the Graça Funicular. Designed with typological continuity in mind, this mechanical transport system seamlessly integrates into the historic fabric of Graça Hill, offering both functionality and an immersive architectural experience.

Inspired by the Bica Elevator, the Graça Funicular follows a similar inclined railway logic, connecting Rua dos Lagares at the base with Calçada da Graça at the top. The route features just two stops—optimized for efficient passenger flow—while ensuring a smooth transition between Lisbon’s layered urban topography. At the lower level, a minimalist station building blends into the street façade, serving as both a mechanical housing unit and a welcoming gateway to Graça.

What sets this funicular design apart is its carefully considered passenger experience. The cabin is divided into two distinct sections: an opaque segment containing entry and emergency doors, and a transparent section that frames panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. As the funicular ascends, riders are treated to a visual journey alongside the Convent of Graça’s enclosure, now being transformed into a public garden. The route then curves through a short tunnel beneath the Miradouro da Graça viewpoint, emerging onto the street with a dramatic reveal of Jardim Augusto Gil and the Tagus River beyond.

Atelier Bugio’s design not only enhances Lisbon’s public transport network but also respects the city’s architectural heritage. By referencing the Bica Elevator’s mechanics and urban integration, the Graça Funicular becomes more than just a means of transportation—it’s a scenic journey that connects people, history, and landscape.

As Lisbon continues to evolve, projects like this reinforce the importance of adaptive mobility solutions that honor the past while embracing the future. The Graça Funicular stands as a testament to how smart urban design can elevate everyday commutes into memorable experiences.
