Louisville’s Belvedere Set for a Green Renaissance: Heatherwick Studio Unveils Vision for Riverfront Park

Heatherwick Studio Unveils Vision for Louisville's Belvedere Park

Heatherwick Studio

Louisville, Kentucky, is poised to gain a striking new public space as Heatherwick Studio joins forces with the local community to reimagine the Belvedere, a prominent riverfront plaza. Opened in 1973, this cherished but aging space is set to undergo a dramatic transformation into a vibrant, green park, breathing new life into a key downtown location.

The Belvedere, a site spanning the equivalent of four American football pitches between 4th and 6th streets, has long held a special place in Louisville’s heart. However, years of neglect have diminished its potential. This ambitious project aims to revitalize the area, strengthening its connection to the Ohio River and creating a dynamic destination for residents and visitors alike.

Heatherwick Studio’s early concept renders reveal a vision that seamlessly integrates the city core with the waterfront. A striking pavilion, characterized by a flowing, ribbon-like form, anchors the design, while lush green spaces and pedestrian-friendly pathways invite exploration and relaxation. The design emphasizes creating a multi-use space, capable of hosting recreation, cultural events, and quiet moments of reflection by the river.

Crucially, the Louisville community has played an integral role in shaping this vision. Three public meetings held in January provided a platform for residents to share their insights and ideas, ensuring the revitalized Belvedere reflects the needs and desires of the people it will serve.

“Belvedere has an incredible potential to become a new green ‘living room’ for Louisville and its people,” says Stuart Wood, Executive Partner and Group Leader at Heatherwick Studio. “Our design will stitch together the Ohio riverfront and connect it to the expansive parks beyond. We’ve been listening to the community and hear a huge appetite for something powerful, exciting and new to happen.”

Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg underscored the importance of this project during his State of the City address, where he unveiled the initial renders. “The Belvedere is 50 years old and showing signs of age,” he stated. “Do we continue to let it crack and crumble, or do we do something new, big, and bold?”

This bold vision is still in the design phase, with construction anticipated to begin in 2026. The completion of the Belvedere will mark Heatherwick Studio’s first project in Kentucky, adding to their impressive portfolio of US-based works, including Google Campuses in California, Little Island Park and Lantern House in New York City, and the new Davidson Park in Milwaukee. The transformation of the Belvedere promises to not only revitalize a neglected space but also create a lasting legacy for Louisville, a dynamic public park that celebrates the city’s connection to the Ohio River.
