In an era defined by conscious consumption and digital autonomy, the economy hotel sector faces a pressing need for evolution. Answering this call, Vermilion Zhou Design Group has unveiled the Hi Inn Self-Service in Ningbo, China, a project that transcends a mere aesthetic refresh to become a fundamental systemic reconstruction of budget accommodation. The fully self-service check-in area establishes a sleek, autonomous arrival experience with integrated kiosks and strategic lighting.

The project marks a significant brand re-evolution, shifting the core principles from “Light, Combination, Simple” to “Fully Self-Service, Eco-Friendly, and Reliably Affordable.” This strategic pivot directly addresses the demands of a new generation of price-sensitive travellers who seek not just a low cost, but a safe, reliable, and autonomous stay. The resulting design is a thoughtful orchestration where every element is considered through the lens of self-service hospitality.

A wider view reveals the compact lobby layout, where a unitized spatial system creates an efficient and welcoming public zone.

This principle is most evident in the design language of self-service that governs the entire space. The compact, functional public zone is designed for intuitive use, allowing guests to check-in, collect amenities, and navigate the environment without staff intervention. Vermilion Zhou Design Group employs a restrained palette of colour, material, and lighting to create an atmosphere that is both welcoming and efficiently unambiguous. This approach ensures that the spatial logic itself guides the guest smoothly through their journey.

Central to achieving this efficiency is a rigorous modular and unit-based design strategy. The firm deconstructed the hotel’s spaces into flexible, prefabricated components. This unitized spatial systemincludes everything from wash walls and wardrobe walls in the guestrooms to self-service dining and laundry zones in the public areas. The use of these guestroom modules—which integrate lighting and technical systems—allows for remarkably quick installation on-site and offers unparalleled adaptability for future reconfigurations or renovations. This modular construction method is key to the project’s rapid deployment and long-term operational efficiency.

Underpinning the entire project is a commitment to tangible sustainable practices. In a move that aligns with the eco-conscious values of modern travellers, over 80 per cent of the construction materials, including steel panels and angle frames, are recyclable. This material strategy not only ensures construction efficiency but also enables the future dismantling and reuse of components, transforming sustainability from a buzzword into an actionable, long-term blueprint for the industry.

By redefining the spatial and operational DNA of the budget hotel, Vermilion Zhou Design Group offers a compelling vision for the future of accessible, intelligent, and responsible hospitality.
