In the heart of Melbourne’s suburbs, R ARCHITECTURE has crafted a deeply personal and innovative sanctuary, Mahogany House. Designed by studio co-founders Vish and Gaurav Rajadhyax for their own growing family, this project transcends typical residential architecture, offering a masterclass in sustainable design, intergenerational living, and a profound connection to nature. The result is a multi-generational home that feels both expansive and intimate, efficient and luxurious.
The very essence of Mahogany House begins with the land itself. The design meticulously preserves three significant existing trees – a liquid amber and silver birch at the front, and the majestic mahogany tree anchoring the rear. This reverence for nature dictated the home’s entire form. The dwelling is organized into two distinct pods, separated by a focal central courtyard that cradles a swimming pool. This courtyard isn’t just a feature; it’s the home’s living, breathing heart, defined by the mahogany tree which establishes the central axis. Every space is oriented to maximise visual and physical connections to this verdant core, ensuring the biophilic design is integral, not incidental.

To the west, a double-storey pod houses the main living areas for the younger family. To the east, a thoughtfully designed grandparents’ pod provides autonomy and comfort with two bedrooms, a bathroom, and a lounge featuring a kitchenette. Linking these two volumes is an elegant entry lounge, strategically positioned to frame a dramatic, surprise view directly into the sun-drenched north-facing central courtyard and pool upon arrival. This layout fosters togetherness while respecting privacy and independence for different generations.

Mahogany House makes a striking architectural statement through its materiality. The exterior is defined by an innovative application of locally made terracotta shingles. Moving beyond their traditional roofing role, these shingles clad both the roof and walls, creating a unique, textured envelope that beautifully complements the surrounding foliage. This bold choice signals the project’s commitment to thoughtful materiality and contextual sensitivity.

Sustainability is woven into the fabric of Mahogany House. The architects championed the concept of “right-sizing” – providing ample, functional space without excess or wastefulness. This philosophy is amplified by rigorous Passivhaus design principles and the use of Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs). Together, these strategies create an exceptionally airtight building envelope, drastically reducing energy demands for heating and cooling and establishing a highly energy-efficient home. The outcome is an eco-conscious living environment that prioritises long-term resource efficiency and comfort.

Inside, the narrative of warmth and connection continues. Vibrant colour tones and soft, curved features define the interiors, creating a dynamic counterpoint to the earthy terracotta exterior. Rich green and plywood joinery reinforces the natural connection, blurring the lines between inside and out. The owners’ extensive collection of indoor plants thrives within this biophilic framework, further integrating nature. Bold accents – a sumptuous leather sofa, vibrant green cushions, and striking blue entry walls – inject energy and personality. Every element, from bespoke furniture to carefully chosen finishes, is curated to promote warmth, balance, and a harmonious relationship with the landscape, ensuring the home feels vibrantly alive yet profoundly grounded.

More than just a residence, Mahogany House stands as a testament to R ARCHITECTURE’s core values. It embodies a commitment to family-centred living, sustainable design, and the transformative power of great design within the suburban context. It’s a home where generations connect under the canopy of a preserved mahogany tree, sheltered by innovative terracotta, and nurtured by principles that ensure it is as kind to the planet as it is welcoming to the family within.
