Mercedes-AMG Unveils CONCEPT AMG GT XX: A 1,360+ HP Electric Revolution Forging the Future of High Performance

CONCEPT AMG GT XX: Electric Sports Car — 1,360+ HP, 360 km/h

Mercedes-AMG

Mercedes-AMG has unleashed a technological tour de force with the CONCEPT AMG GT XX, a radical prototype previewing an upcoming four-door series-production sports car and redefining the boundaries of electric performance. This audacious vision merges supreme endurance, hyper-fast charging, and a fiercely emotional design, anchored by a revolutionary electric drive system developed from the ground up. It’s more than a concept; it’s a declaration of intent for the high performance AMG Electric Architecture (AMG.EA).

“The best minds in our global R&D network have pushed the boundaries,” declares Markus Schäfer, Chief Technology Officer of Mercedes-Benz Group AG. The project unites expertise from Mercedes-Benz in Sindelfingen and Untertürkheim, Mercedes‑AMG in Affalterbach, YASA in the UK, and Formula 1 specialists at Mercedes‑AMG High Performance Powertrains in Brixworth. The result? A pioneering drivetrain technology lifting “performance and endurance to a completely new level.”

At the core of the CONCEPT AMG GT XX lies its revolutionary propulsion: three high performance axial flux motors. Developed from technology pioneered by British specialist YASA (a Mercedes-Benz subsidiary) and further honed by AMG, these motors represent a quantum leap. Compared to conventional radial flux motors, they deliver triple the power density, are two-thirds lighter, and occupy just one-third of the space. This translates to a staggering peak output exceeding 1,000 kW (over 1,360 hp) and a top speed surpassing 360 km/h. Crucially, their design enables unprecedented continuous power delivery, allowing drivers to push repeatedly to the limit without performance fade.

Complementing the motors is an all-new High Performance Electric Battery (HP.EB), infused with knowledge from the AMG ONE hypercar and Formula 1. Featuring bespoke, tall-and-slim cylindrical cells with laser-welded aluminium housings, full-tab technology, and advanced NCMA chemistry, it prioritizes power output and thermal management. Direct cooling with an electrically non-conductive oil flows around each of the 3,000+ cells, maintaining an optimal temperature window even under extreme duress. This enables the CONCEPT AMG GT XX to achieve a game-changing feat: adding approximately 400 kilometres of range (WLTP) in just five minutes using prototype 850kW+ charging hardware developed with Alpitronic. After charging, full power is immediately available – a first for electric vehicles.

Gorden Wagener, Chief Design Officer, describes the CONCEPT AMG GT XX as embodying “the hot part of our design philosophy of sensual purity.” Its dynamic fastback silhouette, sunset beam orange liquid-metal paint, low-slung bonnet with power domes, and sharply raked windscreen scream performance. The AMG-specific grille evolves with an oval, concave form, while stacked main headlights and integrated auxiliary lights create a futuristic face. Aerodynamics are paramount: a drag coefficient of just 0.198 is achieved through a flat shape, active AIRPANEL louvres, an underbody generating a Venturi effect, and a seamless active airbrake integrated into the rear. The stunning rear features six circular taillights and an innovative MBUX Fluid Light Panel with over 700 programmable LEDs for communicating with the outside world.

The cockpit is a purist, driver-focused haven inspired by motorsport. Visible body structures, carbon-fibre bucket seats integrated into the rear bulkhead, and orange-accented elements echoing high-voltage cables dominate. The steering wheel, reminiscent of the AMG ONE, features paddles for recuperation control. Cutting-edge MBUX powered by MB.OS runs across seamless glass displays. Sustainability is woven in: the floor uses 100% recycled materials with a chequered flag motif, while seats feature LABFIBER Biotech Leather Alternative derived from recycled AMG GT3 racing tyres via pyrolysis. 3D-printed seat pads offer customizable ergonomics, and door handles utilize a biodegradable LABFIBER Biotech Silk Alternative.

The CONCEPT AMG GT XX pushes boundaries beyond propulsion with groundbreaking interactive technologies. Electroluminescent MBUX Fluid Light Paint adorns the flanks, creating dynamic nighttime visuals and serving as a charging progress indicator during its record-fast power sessions. Simultaneously, external driving sounds are projected through speakers seamlessly integrated into the headlight housings. This ingenious packaging saves weight and space while enabling uniquely configurable acoustic signatures for the electric era.

Aerodynamic efficiency meets active cooling in a patented world-first: 21-inch active Aero Wheels. These forged alloys feature five electronically controlled aero-blades. Normally positioned flush for minimal drag and maximum range, the blades actively deploy – powered by self-sufficient mini-generators within the wheel hubs – when the vehicle’s control system detects high brake temperatures. This channels massive cooling airflow directly to the brakes, resolving the classic conflict between aerodynamic efficiency and thermal management under extreme performance.

The foundation of its agility lies in the fully variable AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive system. Enabled by the trio of independently controlled axial flux motors, it allows infinitely adjustable torque distribution between the front and rear axles in real-time. This delivers unparalleled levels of traction, directional stability, and driver-focused agility, ensuring the immense power is translated into precise, exhilarating control under all conditions.

The CONCEPT AMG GT XX is more than a glimpse; it’s the blueprint for Mercedes-AMG‘s electric future. It promises a production sports car combining unparalleled electric performance, hyper-fast charging, emotional design, and innovative technology, proving that the heart of AMG – its drive – beats stronger than ever, even in the electric age.
