Nestled in Beijing, the Mondrian Palette Residence by Xia Fu of Shangcheng Design is a masterful interplay of color, form, and emotion. Designed for renowned Chinese education specialist Ms. Shen, this 600 square-metres home draws directly from the visual language of Piet Mondrian, employing primary red, yellow, and blue blocks to shape a living environment that is both dynamic and deeply personal. The result is a bold interior design statement that bridges art, architecture, and everyday life.

The vibrant Mondrian-inspired living room features a multifunctional library and media area, designed for both relaxation and creative work.

The home serves as a vibrant sanctuary for three generations of women, each with distinct lifestyles and sensibilities. Ms. Shen, who has millions of online followers and a passionate commitment to cultural education, wanted a space that could accommodate filming, teaching, family gatherings, and quiet reflection. Xia Fu responded with a design that is as functional as it is philosophical, using color theory and fluid geometries to carve out zones for both shared experiences and private retreats.

A bold red spiral staircase ascends dramatically from the home library, serving as the architectural centerpiece of the Beijing residence.

At the heart of the residence is a striking red spiral staircase that acts as a sculptural centerpiece. Its rhythmic curves contrast with the strict Mondrian-inspired grid, creating a visual tension that mirrors the homeowner’s own balance between public vitality and inner calm. Beneath the staircase, a curated family library functions as a multi-purpose hub—serving as a recording studio, a storytelling corner, and a meditation nook, all softly illuminated by integrated lighting.

The modern kitchen harmonizes functionality with Mondrian’s primary color palette, creating a dynamic and inspiring culinary space.

Throughout the home, cheetah motifs appear as a personal emblem of Ms. Shen’s strength and perceptiveness. These elements—whether in art, décor, or subtle details—interact playfully with the primary-colored backdrop, injecting a layer of wild elegance and symbolic depth. The use of Klein Blue upholstery and sunshine-yellow accents further enhances the expressive quality of the living areas, making each room feel both curated and spontaneous.

The entrance foyer is greeted by a striking blue art installation, symbolizing life’s涟漪 (ripples) and setting the home’s artistic tone.

A ground-floor suite designed for Ms. Shen’s mother embodies safety and serenity. Delicate floral wallpapers, curved details, and ample natural light transform the bedroom into a restorative garden-like retreat. Large windows and semi-transparent screens allow the landscape to seep indoors, reinforcing a connection to nature while preserving privacy and comfort.

A plush Klein blue sofa anchors the living area, offering a vibrant yet grounded contrast to the warm wooden flooring.

On the second level, Xia Fu explores the nuance of intimacy and boundaries. A shared zone between Ms. Shen and her daughter can be reconfigured for togetherness or solitude, supported by flexible geometric divisions and a soft, dreamlike palette. In the master bedroom, lavender tones and floral motifs converge under an artistic pendant light, crafting an atmosphere that is both romantic and reflective.

What makes the Mondrian Palette Residence exceptional is its narrative depth. It is not merely a living space but a canvas of lived experiences—a home where every color, curve, and corner tells a story. From the art installation of water droplets symbolizing life’s ripple effects to the custom bar area where the family gathers, the design resonates with warmth and intention.

Ultimately, Shangcheng Design has delivered a profound commentary on contemporary living. By weaving Mondrian’s aesthetic into the DNA of a family home, Xia Fu has created a timeless yet timely project that celebrates female autonomy, intergenerational connection, and the art of dwelling. The Beijing-based residence stands as a testament to how bold architectural design can harmonize with personal narrative and functional elegance.
