Mass and Transparency: The Palissade House by naturehumaine

naturehumaine's Palissade House: A study in brick, light, and landscape.

Raphaël Thibodeau

Nestled between Route 112 and the tranquil waters of Lake Orford in Austin, Quebec, the Palissade House by naturehumaine emerges as a compelling study in site-responsive design. Commissioned by clients with a discerning eye honed by years in the fashion and design industries, this unconventional residence negotiates the complexities of its context, establishing a distinct architectural dialogue between its robust, street-facing facade and its transparent, lake-oriented elevation. The project’s genesis, rooted in the limitations of a pre-existing boathouse situated within the lake’s flood zone, ultimately catalyzed the creation of a dwelling that redefines the lakeside vernacular.

The project began with a modest boathouse situated on a challenging, steep plot partially within the lake’s flood zone. Recognizing the limitations of the existing structure, the architects opted for a complete rebuild, relocating the house to higher ground, further from the lake. This strategic decision gave rise to the project’s defining characteristic: a robust, almost fortress-like presence facing the road, evoking the image of a brick palisade. This “defensive” posture, however, belies the building’s inherent connection to its natural surroundings.

The site presented a unique duality: a south-facing road frontage and a north-facing lake view. naturehumaine masterfully navigated this challenge. While the street-facing facade is intentionally opaque, emphasizing the “palisade” concept, the lakeside elevation embraces transparency, maximizing panoramic views and seamlessly integrating the house into the landscape.

A high horizontal window band on the south side mitigates the lack of direct sunlight on the north-facing living spaces, flooding the entrance vestibule and bathrooms with natural light. Further enhancing interior illumination, a skylight runs along the roof ridge, bathing the central walkway and adjacent living areas in a soft, diffused glow.

The house presents itself as a substantial masonry block crowned by a low-pitched, four-sided roof. A detached masonry garage complements the main structure, reinforcing the cohesive architectural language. The choice of brick, beyond its inherent durability and acoustic properties (mitigating noise from the nearby road), plays a crucial role in grounding the building, creating a sense of permanence. This sense of weight is cleverly juxtaposed by the horizontal window band, which visually separates the roof from the brick mass, creating the illusion of a floating plane.

The interior layout unfolds across two levels: the main floor at street level and a garden level below. This arrangement strategically positions service areas towards the road, while living spaces are oriented towards the lake, maximizing the connection to the water. A west-facing terrace, accessible from the kitchen, provides an ideal setting for enjoying sunsets. The kitchen’s functional wall extends onto the terrace, creating a sense of continuity and providing privacy from the entrance while incorporating an outdoor kitchen area.

Inside, the material palette reflects the clients’ desire for warmth, texture, and timelessness, rejecting the starkness often associated with contemporary design. Stained wood paneling graces the ceilings, while cherry veneer adds warmth to the walls. Copper-framed windows complement the rich wood tones. The exterior beige brick extends into the kitchen, creating a seamless transition between interior and exterior. A recessed taupe-toned niche in the kitchen adds a subtle yet sophisticated detail, echoed in the interior and exterior railings. Natural stone features prominently in the fireplace, kitchen island, and vanities, adding a touch of natural elegance.

The Palissade House is more than just a dwelling; it is an architectural expression of its owners’ artistic sensibilities. naturehumaine has skillfully translated their vision into a cohesive and compelling design, creating a home that is both robust and inviting, private yet connected to its surroundings. This carefully crafted residence stands as a testament to the power of thoughtful design, offering inspiration to its inhabitants and visitors alike.
