Norm Architects Kolon House: Danish Design & Lake Views

Jonas Bjerre-Poulsen

Nestled along the tranquil shores of Gentofte Lake, just north of Copenhagen, a historic family home, dating back to 1918, has been reborn. In the hands of Norm Architects, this residence has undergone a meticulous transformation, emerging as a serene retreat for a modern family seeking respite from the clamor of contemporary life. The project, aptly named Kolon House, is a demonstration of the power of thoughtful design, where architecture and interior seamlessly intertwine to cultivate a sense of calm and well-being.

At the heart of Norm Architects’ philosophy lies the understanding that our surroundings profoundly shape our daily experience. Recognizing the limitations of a “one-size-fits-all” approach, the firm embarked on a bespoke journey, crafting interiors that resonate with the home’s unique context. Every element, from the play of light to the selection of materials, colors, and scale, was carefully considered to foster a sense of cohesion and harmony. These tailored compositions, designed to endure, transcend mere functionality, becoming integral to the architectural narrative, enriching the dwelling with inherent value.

The kitchen, a collaborative masterpiece between Norm Architects and Danish cabinetmakers Kolon, exemplifies this approach. Here, contemporary sophistication meets timeless craftsmanship. A sleek stone countertop anchors the space, its cool elegance juxtaposed with the warm, tactile richness of oak and dark-oiled walnut elements. The classic herringbone flooring provides a grounding foundation, its intricate pattern adding a layer of historical resonance to the modern design.

The strategic deployment of diverse wood types orchestrates a symphony of atmospheres throughout the home. Dark tones, imbued with a sense of quietude and protection, create intimate pockets of retreat, while lighter, more elegant woods illuminate open areas, fostering a dynamic and stimulating environment. This interplay of light and shadow, texture and tone, underscores the home’s ability to adapt to the diverse needs of its inhabitants.

Upon reaching the first floor, visitors are welcomed by a central axis, a thoughtful architectural feature designed to enhance the feeling of spaciousness. This linear layout invites the eye to explore the entire floor, seamlessly connecting the bedroom, office, children’s room, and culminating at the striking freestanding stone plinth wall in the bathroom.

The elevated ceiling and exposed beams, which are vestiges of the original design, further enhance the sense of volume, resulting in a light and open ambiance. This unique integration of spaces promotes a harmonious flow, effectively merging private and communal areas into a cohesive environment.

In the central home office, a long plank table stretches from wall to wall, providing ample workspace for two. This linear motif is echoed in the bedroom, where a low bench runs the length of the room beneath the windows, subtly enhancing the room’s perceived width. Similarly, floor-to-ceiling wardrobes in the dressing area accentuate the verticality of the space, creating a sense of grandeur.

The bathroom, a sanctuary of tranquility, contrasts sharply with the bright, open office space. Walnut cabinets, a sink crafted from a striking purple-greyish marble, and ceramic tiles underfoot create a calming, tactile environment. The interplay of materials and textures transforms this functional space into a personal retreat, a moment of respite within the rhythm of daily life.
