Nan Arquitectos's Patch Apartment: A 1960s Space Reimagined with Ceramic Tile Accents

Iván Casal Nieto

Nestled within the vibrant, yet architecturally diverse, cityscape of Pontevedra, Spain, Nan Arquitectos has crafted a compelling narrative of spatial transformation. The “Patch” apartment, as it’s aptly named, is a testament to sensitive intervention, where the echoes of the 1960s structure resonate harmoniously with a contemporary vision tailored to the owner’s unique professional and personal needs.

The studio’s brief was clear: to create an open, versatile space centered around a substantial work studio, seamlessly integrated within a pre-existing building of distinctive character. This challenge, far from daunting, became the catalyst for a design that celebrates the building’s history while infusing it with a fresh, vibrant aesthetic.

The apartment unfolds across three bedrooms, a communal living/dining/kitchen area, three bathrooms, and the pivotal work studio. Nan Arquitectos’ unifying design principle is a consistent material palette, weaving a cohesive narrative throughout the home. The original terrazzo flooring, a nostalgic nod to the building’s era, is preserved and complemented by newly introduced elements.

Dark-stained wood, reminiscent of classic interiors, anchors the space, while a carefully curated spectrum of pastel yellow, sky blue, maroon, and English green—applied to the doors of each room—infuses a playful yet sophisticated touch. This color scheme, a direct reference to the owner’s artistic inspirations, evokes the architectural mastery of Le Corbusier and Robert Mallet-Stevens.

The work studio emerges as the heart of the project. A monumental bookcase, seamlessly integrated with the kitchen, forms a defining architectural element. Mobile, reconfigurable tables facilitate both collaborative and individual work, reflecting the studio’s commitment to flexibility and adaptability. The studio is the centerpiece of the home, a testament to the owner’s professional life, and a space where creativity is fostered.

Nan Arquitectos‘ approach to the existing structure is one of profound respect. Recognizing the building’s unique metal framework, a rarity for its time, they sought to preserve its essence while introducing contemporary interventions. The challenge of integrating new partitions within the existing framework, leaving behind spatial “gaps,” was ingeniously transformed into a design virtue.

This is where the “patch” concept takes center stage. A 10×10 black ceramic tile, chosen for its stark contrast against the warm terrazzo and dark wood, acts as a visual thread, stitching together the old and the new. This tile, applied as a plinth along vertical walls, reinforces the continuity of the flooring, creating a cohesive visual language. The use of wood paneling with integrated, warm indirect lighting, creates a relaxing atmosphere, while highlighting the architectural elements. The lighting design, carefully considered, allows for the creation of different moods, tailored to the time of day and the activities within the space.

The “Patch” apartment is a masterclass in architectural sensitivity. Nan Arquitectos has not merely renovated a space; they have engaged in a dialogue with its history, creating a dwelling that is both contemporary and timeless. The apartment is a testament to the power of thoughtful intervention, where the past and present converge to create a harmonious and inspiring living environment. The apartment is a carefully crafted work of art, a patchwork of time, materials, and design sensibility.
