Plumbago by OPA Blends Mediterranean Inspiration with Mexican Craftsmanship in Mexico City’s Culinary Hub

Plumbago: Mediterranean Restaurant & Cultural Venue by OPA in Mexico City

In the bustling Cuauhtémoc neighborhood of Mexico City, where high-rises dominate the skyline, Oficina de Práctica Arquitectónica (OPA) has unveiled Plumbago, a Mediterranean-inspired restaurant and cultural venue that redefines urban hospitality. Nestled between towering structures near Reforma Avenue, this compact yet transformative project combines minimalist design with raw materials, creating a human-scale oasis amid the city’s corporate energy.

The design of Plumbago revolves around two parallel pitched-roof volumes, each distinct in materiality and function. The larger space, wrapped in corrugated polycarbonate sheets, floods the main dining area and bar with natural light, accommodating up to 70 guests. Adjacent to it, a smaller enclosed shed, clad in Pintro sheet, houses the kitchen and service areas, ensuring a seamless workflow. This juxtaposition of transparency and enclosure reflects OPA’s mastery of spatial contrast and functional versatility.

Drawing from the warmth of traditional Mexican suburban houses, the interior exudes a domestic charm. Brick walls, crafted using local techniques, add texture and earthy tones, while an exposed steel structure in ochre hues introduces an industrial edge. A geometric planter bridges the indoor and outdoor spaces, reinforcing the venue’s connection to nature and transforming it into an urban greenhouse. The open-plan layout encourages free movement, linking the dining area to a rear terrace for cross-ventilation and an uninterrupted flow between inside and out.

Beyond its architectural prowess, Plumbago is a celebration of culinary artistry and cultural expression. The restaurant’s Mediterranean-inspired menu, crafted from locally sourced produce, finds harmony with a curated program of exhibitions and live music performances. Furnishings of wood and steel echo the material palette, completing the cohesive aesthetic.

Founded in 2014 by Diego Mañón and Rosalía Yuste, OPA continues to challenge architectural norms with projects like Plumbago, where creativity thrives within constraints. Their hands-on approach and commitment to accessible architecture shine through in every detail, from the precise construction techniques to the thoughtful integration of light and vegetation.
