Refik Anadol's AI-Driven “Living Architecture: Gehry” at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao

Refik Anadol, Bilbao 2025

The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao is presenting a pioneering exhibition, in situ: Refik Anadol, which will run until October 19, 2025. This cutting-edge display, driven by Artificial Intelligence (AI), draws inspiration from the museum’s renowned architecture and introduces a fresh series called in situ, dedicated to site-specific installations and multimedia creations by modern artists.

Refik Anadol, a Turkish-American media artist renowned for his pioneering work in the aesthetics of machine intelligence, will present his immersive installation, Living Architecture: Gehry. The exhibition reimagines open-access imagery and archival material of Frank Gehry’s architectural projects into dynamic visual narratives, reinterpreting Gehry’s designs through AI-generated forms.

Anadol’s installation will feature the Large Architecture Model (LAM), an innovative AI model developed by Refik Anadol Studio. This project, a milestone in the studio’s research, uses Gehry’s archive as the first dataset to explore the fusion of architectural spaces, materials, and data into transformative new art forms.

The immersive experience will be enhanced by a custom soundscape created by Anadol’s longtime collaborator, Kerim Karaoglu, integrating recordings of materials sourced from within the Guggenheim Bilbao.

The in situ series aims to broaden the understanding of contemporary practice by focusing on experiential, atmospheric, and thought-provoking art that intersects with technology, science, music, performance, and the visual arts.

Anadol’s work uses data as a primary material, employing neural networks to generate striking visualizations of digitized memories. His practice unites architecture, AI, and art, inviting audiences to rethink their relationships with the physical world and the evolving possibilities of decentralized technologies.

The exhibition is supported by 10F1 as Exhibition Partner and Euskaltel as Technology Partner, with collaboration from Google Cloud. 10F1 champions the rise of digital-age artistic expression, collaborating with forward-thinking artists and institutions. Euskaltel supports cutting-edge art that promotes new ideas, recognizing AI’s potential to offer humanity multiple utilities.

Visitors to the exhibition can also engage with the Didaktika project, featuring educational spaces and digital content that complement the exhibition, providing insights into Anadol’s work processes and AI-related terms.
