Nestled in the serene expanse of Prince Edward County, a few hours east of Toronto, the South Bay Residence by StudioAC redefines rural architecture with a bold yet harmonious approach. Situated on a north-facing flat site, the home engages dynamically with its surroundings—a vast open field, a delicate grove of trees, and a rugged shoreline. The design transcends conventional linear structures, instead introducing three intersecting “living bars” that carve out sheltered outdoor spaces and frame curated views of the landscape.

The architectural concept hinges on a clever reorientation of living spaces, shifting from traditional “landscape” to “portrait” orientations. Unlike previous projects that relied on a repeating rectangular grid, StudioAC rotated the grid to emphasize the short side, resulting in a striking 48′ x 12′ living area. This configuration maximizes the façade facing the view, dissolving the boundary between indoor and outdoor spaces. When seated inside, the expansive glazing eliminates peripheral obstructions, immersing occupants in the natural panorama.

The roof form is a sculptural feat, composed of three mirrored shed structures that intersect at the main living bar. This design not only provides shelter and solar shading but also introduces a dynamic topography to the otherwise flat site. The undulating roofline evokes the rhythm of rolling hills, enriching both the interior experience and the exterior silhouette. Inside, the expressive geometry enhances the sense of volume, offering a contemporary reinterpretation of rural vernacular architecture.

Materiality plays a crucial role in the home’s restrained yet tactile aesthetic. The interior palette is dominated by plywood cladding, with white walls strategically placed below a datum line to highlight artwork. In contrast, wet areas, including an indoor spa, feature bold tile finishes, creating a visual and tactile distinction.

Though the architecture appears complex, its foundation lies in familiar proportions and vernacular forms. The uniqueness of the South Bay Residence emerges from the interplay of geometric shapes and their dialogue with the landscape. The result is a home that not only frames its natural surroundings but actively engages with them, offering an ever-evolving spatial narrative.

For those seeking innovative rural architecture that balances sculptural energy with practicality, StudioAC’s design stands as a compelling example of modern Ontario architecture, where form and environment exist in seamless harmony.
