Nestled among the lush Nim trees of Mexico’s Oaxacan coast, SUUEL hotel emerges as a poetic love letter to Puerto Escondido. Designed by Mexico City-based CAAM Arquitectos, this 679 m² sanctuary transcends conventional hospitality, embodying decades of reverence for the region’s beach culture while reimagining sustainable architecture for the modern traveler.

The project’s foundation lies in its profound connection to place. SUUEL’s design and programming absorb the local, traditional essence of Puerto Escondido, not through imitation, but by channeling its visceral energy. The hotel dissolves into the landscape, camouflaged by generous foliage, creating a “rich inner life” that prioritizes harmony with nature.

Upon arrival, guests encounter a serene sand garden—a prelude to Pacifica Radio, the onsite restaurant and cultural hub. This versatile space morphs: by day, a pétanque court under the sun; by night, the epicenter of “Vinyl Fetish Sessions,” where selectors spin records beneath the stars.

Movement through SUUEL is a tactile experience—architecture “recognized and discovered through the feet.” Shade and coastal breezes flow uninterrupted, guided by wood-clad structures that carve natural wind tunnels. Fabrics and curtains dance sensually, softening boundaries between interior and jungle.

The hotel’s nine rooms defy minimalist trends, offering generous spaces with jungle-like terraces and, in most cases, private plunge pools. Spatial quality reigns, encouraging lounging, work, or immersion in the wild symphony of the Oaxacan Pacific.

A crowning surprise awaits atop SUUEL: a communal pool tucked into the canopy, a hidden oasis where the roar of distant waves underscores the retreat’s ethos. Every material choice—especially the dominant wood—echoes CAAM Arquitectos’ commitment to softening built environments while celebrating craft.

Beyond aesthetics, SUUEL is a manifesto for mindful development. It proves destinations like Puerto Escondido can evolve without sacrificing soul—preserving its status as a “beach dream” and sanctuary for reconnection. As CAAM Arquitectos intended, this is “a grand dream with a human scale,” where sustainable architecture and cultural reverence ensure Puerto Escondido’s magic endures.
