Nestled among the rolling vineyards of Padova, Italy, Texturised House by Bongiana Architetture is a masterclass in raw purity and material storytelling. What began as a modest rural structure has been transformed into a contemporary refuge, where light, texture, and memory converge to create an atmospheric sanctuary for family gatherings and quiet reflection.
The project embraces exposed materials and rough surfaces, with every wall and floor serving as a canvas for tactile narratives. Instead of concealing its structural essence, the house proudly displays its materiality, engaging visitors in a dynamic interplay of light and shadow. The architects have meticulously crafted each element to feel essential, stripping away excess to highlight the beauty of raw concrete, terracotta, and reclaimed wood.
At the core of the design is the double-height barn space, a luminous void where natural light floods through precisely positioned openings. Here, a suspended bookcase floats delicately, introducing an intermediate space that balances intimacy with openness. The light shifts throughout the day, casting ever-changing patterns that animate the minimalist interior.
Fire serves as a symbolic link between past and present. The original fireplace in the older section remains untouched, while a cast iron stove anchors the new barn area. Surrounding it, walls clad in Split terracotta tiles—designed by Bongiana Architetture for Terraformae—create a rhythmic, textured backdrop where the grout lines become the sole decorative motif. This minimalist approach transforms the surface into a vibrant, tactile experience.
The flooring further blurs tradition and innovation. Instead of classic Venetian terrazzo, the architects used concrete embedded with terracotta strips, repurposed from the cuts of hollow bricks used in the portico. This thoughtful detail ties the ground plane to the building’s construction, weaving memory and materiality into a single, cohesive expression.
Furnishings add another layer of narrative, with carefully curated vintage pieces like a 1950s kitchen, salvaged and reimagined for its new setting. The interplay of old and new feels organic, reinforcing the home’s lived-in authenticity.
