Designed by Jatin Chaletbouw and i29 architects, the Lounge Lodge is a compact retreat nestled within the RCN Vakantiepark De Noordster in Dwingeloo, Netherlands, which redefines small-scale living through a sophisticated dialogue between rhythmic facade cassettes and a highly efficient twenty-square-meter interior.
A vision of smart affordability. The project emerges not from a desire for excess, but from a rigorous search for meaningful quality within a modest footprint. In an era where “more” often equates to clutter, this lodge champions a distinctive concept of a minimalist retreat. The collaboration between Jatin Chaletbouw and i29 architects centers on the power of simplicity with character, proving that a limited budget and a tiny floor plan can still yield a structure with a profound sense of identity.

Elevated spatial efficiency. Positioned on a subtle elevation, the lodge is lifted slightly above the forest floor, allowing it to open itself to the surrounding park environment. Despite measuring just twenty square meters, the home is meticulously organized to accommodate four people. The interior features a fully equipped kitchen, an intimate lounge area, and a fold-out dining table that disappears when not in use. By prioritizing multifunctional elements, the designers have managed to pack the utility of a full-scale home into a microscopic volume.

Vertical layering and intimacy. A clever sleeping niche and a compact bathroom form the core of the private quarters. Above these functional zones, a mezzanine level provides a second sleeping area, introducing a surprising sense of layering to the compact volume. This verticality ensures that the living space remains airy and open, preventing the claustrophobia often associated with tiny houses. The transition between the high-ceilinged lounge and the cozy sleeping quarters creates a varied sensory experience, alternating between expansive views and protective enclosures.

The sculptural exterior. The character of the lodge is defined by the rhythm of its facade cassettes. These panels are not merely decorative; they house carefully integrated openings that lend the volume a sculptural depth. As the sun moves throughout the day, the shadows cast by the deep-set panels shift, giving the building a kinetic quality. The chosen green tone of the cladding functions as a camouflage, allowing the structure to blend into the Drenthe landscape while maintaining a crisp, contemporary silhouette.

Blurring the boundaries. A large south-facing sliding door serves as the primary interface between the interior and the woods. When opened, it draws daylight deep into the living area and effectively erases the boundary between the indoor lounge and the outdoor deck. This visual connection is essential to the project’s success, as it allows the small interior to borrow space from the vast landscape, making the twenty-square-meter footprint feel significantly larger than its physical dimensions suggest.

Materiality and sustainability. Every choice in form and material reflects a contemporary vision of sustainable holiday homes. The use of prefabricated elements and high-quality finishes ensures longevity and reduces waste during construction. The proportions are balanced to feel both modest and expressive, achieving a refined aesthetic that avoids the typical rustic clichés of forest cabins. It is a testament to how thoughtful planning can elevate a standard holiday park typology into a piece of high-quality environmental art.

A legacy of refined living. This project continues a trajectory of exploration into compact and unconventional housing solutions. It echoes the social sensitivity seen in a multigenerational patio home and the playful, elevated geometry of the Buitenverblijf Nest. Much like the Capsula minimalist tiny houses, the Lounge Lodge demonstrates that the future of the getaway lies in precision, craftsmanship, and a deep respect for the natural context.
