A Birdhouse-inspired Retreat: Buitenverblijf Nest House by i29 and NAMO Architecture

Buitenverblijf Nest / i29 architects & NAMO Architecture

The Buitenverblijf Nest house reimagines the concept of a ‘folly’ by incorporating elements inspired by nature, such as its oversized birdhouse design and playful references to a love nest. According to its architects, i29 and NAMO Architecture, this structure belongs to a unique typology that serves an artistic or playful function. Nestled in a serene and lush setting in the woodlands near Arnhem, within the creative community of Buitenplaats Koningsweg, which was once a barracks transformed into an artistic enclave, the Nest embodies its unconventional purpose.

The architects drew inspiration from the concept of a birdhouse, incorporating elements of this archetype into the design. They prioritized the use of eco-friendly materials that have minimal impact on human, animal, and environmental well-being. Sustainability was a key consideration throughout the design process, with a focus on energy efficiency and environmental responsibility.

To achieve this, the Nest is equipped with energy-efficient electrical installations and a well-insulated building envelope. Additionally, solar panels installed on the roof provide the necessary energy requirements. The architectural design not only caters to human habitation but also provides a habitat for local flora and fauna. Birds, tree climbing plants, and insects are encouraged to inhabit and gradually take over parts of the Nest. Behind the cladding, various species such as nuthatches, woodpeckers, and bats find shelter within this harmonious coexistence of nature and architecture.

The cabin is composed of two internal levels. The first floor encompasses a kitchen and living room, which seamlessly extend to a spacious terrace. On the upper level, there is a generously sized bed that can accommodate four individuals. The minimalist design of the interiors is cleverly complemented by concealed storage spaces and integrated cupboards. This thoughtful arrangement enables the occupants to fully engage with the natural environment and experience a profound connection with the lush surroundings from every angle.

Despite the limited size of the interior space, the perception of spaciousness is effectively enhanced through the utilization of extensive sight lines and a well-designed interior arrangement. Moreover, the living room’s expansive round windows and wall-to-wall sliding doors not only provide stunning panoramic views of the surrounding environment, but also contribute to the overall maximization of the spatial experience.
