Park House Food Merchants Restaurant In Sydney’s Northern Beaches

Felix Forest

The Park House Food Merchants is a vibrant 200-seat dining restaurant nestled within the newly renovated Mona Vale Hotel, located on Sydney’s picturesque Northern Beaches. This restaurant has been envisioned as a loft-style art warehouse, harmoniously blending the nostalgic essence of the old motel with a 70s coastal and retro flair.

Straddling the line between the minimalist aesthetics of Donald Judd and the warmth of Scandinavian modernism, the loft exudes both strength and sophistication. It is meticulously designed to handle the bustling foot traffic of its coastal setting, serving as a bold and artistic addition to the weathered facade of the former hotel. It embodies the spirit of an art gallery, a loft, and the inviting charm of a classic motel.

The design process delved into a variety of masonry techniques, incorporating elements like arches, corbels, and coursing, all while integrating a thoughtful selection of lighting, furnishings, and artwork. Alexander &CO. skillfully revealed and enhanced the existing steel and timber framework, creating a striking double-height space that is both visually captivating and functional, topped with a retractable roof. This expansive area is bathed in light from custom LED high bay lights and adorned with oversized paintings that grace the loft void.

Inside, the restaurant revolves around an open show kitchen framed by recycled brick arches. The polished concrete floors are punctuated by moments of artistic flair, featuring fan-shaped Carrara mosaic tiles and custom-colored patterns, alongside stone chequer plate tile coursing. A striking internal bar, crafted from retro granite, serves as a focal point, while Art Deco accents around a brick fireplace create cozy nooks for intimate dining experiences. Outside, stacked logs add a rustic touch, and a double-sided fireplace anchors the lounge areas and high bar, all beneath a canopy of twinkling fairy lights that illuminate the airy courtyard and retractable roof.

The completed venue radiates a sense of nostalgia, enhanced by a tactile patina that invites exploration. Furnished with custom Oregon and hardwood pieces, plush leather banquettes, and thoughtfully reclaimed light fixtures, the space possesses a unique “found” quality. It is both surprising and welcoming, offering an artistic engagement that remains true to its inspirational roots.

In essence, the Park House Food Merchants stands as a testament to creative design, where every element is carefully curated to evoke a sense of place and history, making it a must-visit destination on Sydney’s Northern Beaches.
