Apara’s 106 – Projet Convention: Exposing Concrete, Integrating Plywood and Steel in a Parisian Apartment Renovation

Apara's 106 - Projet Convention: Exposing Concrete, Integrating Plywood and Steel in a Parisian Apartment Renovation

Philippe Billard

In the heart of Paris, Apara, under the direction of Charlotte Guillochon and Victor Mesguich, has masterfully completed the “106 – Projet Convention,” a renovation that breathes new life into an apartment originally built in 1969. The building, conceived by architects Marc Villemant and Paul Verny, features reinforced concrete floors and walls, elements that Apara chose to highlight in this striking transformation.

Apara’s approach to the project was one of thoughtful revelation. The initial step involved a comprehensive clearing of the space, a process that unveiled the building’s inherent structural logic, which had been obscured by previous renovations. By stripping away the layers of finishing work, Apara was able to identify the key elements that would form the foundation of their design: the ceiling and selected walls.

This decision to work with the existing structure reflects Apara’s commitment to economy of resources, both physical and financial. In an era where sustainability is paramount, the firm’s choice to preserve and celebrate the original building elements is both environmentally conscious and aesthetically compelling.

The material palette of the renovation further underscores this ethos. Apara selected durable, untreated materials such as stainless steel and okoumé plywood for the interior joinery, ensuring longevity and a timeless aesthetic. These choices not only speak to the firm’s dedication to quality but also contribute to the overall clarity and brightness of the apartment.

The design maximizes the natural light offered by the apartment’s large openings and three loggias, enhancing the sense of space and connection to the surrounding urban environment. The interplay of light and the exposed concrete creates a dynamic and engaging interior landscape.

“106 – Projet Convention” transcends mere renovation; it stands as a tribute to Apara’s talent for crafting projects that are attuned to societal, environmental, and territorial challenges. By integrating bioclimatic design principles with a profound grasp of spatial dynamics, materials, and color palettes, Apara has created a space that is not only functional but also uplifting.
