Rads Designs Reno’s Bistrot With High-Gloss Timber to Recall ‘70s Milan

Reno's Bistrot hospitality interior design by RADS in Adelaide CBD featuring high gloss timber and '70s Italian futurism style.

The new Reno’s Bistrot in Adelaide‘s  Central Business District stands as a sophisticated case study in high-impact hospitality design, demonstrating how an established architectural firm can channel historical aesthetics into a bold, modern venue. Conceived by local studio RADS, this 200-square-metre space is more than just an eatery; it is a meticulously crafted dialogue between classic Italian tradition and the visionary tenets of Italo futurism, drawing particularly sharp, glossy cues from the vibrant energy of ’70s Milan. It is a project that successfully challenges the notion that cafés are intrinsically linked to daylight hours, instead proposing a fluid, versatile environment that remains compelling from the first espresso to the late-night aperitivo.

The design’s primary function is to transform a routine corporate passage into a vibrant hospitality destination. By occupying the ground floor of a commercial tower, Reno’s Bistrot was engineered to adapt seamlessly to the city’s daily rhythm, facilitating the rapid coffee trade demanded by early-morning commuters while also supporting relaxed social and dining experiences for evening patrons. This duality required a highly flexible space that could efficiently manage internal thresholds for tower occupants while simultaneously asserting a distinct identity and opening a new street-facing entry for the wider community.

Reno’s Bistrot asserts a bold, street-facing identity, opening the formerly corporate building to the dynamism of Adelaide’s Business Central District.

Materiality is the driving force behind the atmosphere, establishing a clear link to a rich Italian heritage while maintaining a sharp, contemporary edge. Warm, high gloss timber is employed throughout the space, providing a deeply inviting texture that recalls the suburban delis and classic trattorias of the past. This organic warmth is balanced by the deliberate, precise installation of modern finishes, including polished steel accents and deep, tactile tilework.

The cash register area is defined by the backlit, retro Reno’s logo suspended above the counter, which features the warm high gloss timber finish nodding to Italian heritage.

The meticulous selection of these elements ensures the venue’s successful integration into the surrounding environment, bridging workplace culture with genuine urban life. Part of a broader office-tower upgrade, the bistrot contributes significantly to the public life of the lobby, creating a dynamic anchor point that contributes beyond the building’s functional envelope. The success of the design lies in its ability to handle immense foot traffic without ever feeling transient or utilitarian.

A mix of high-gloss timber and deep, rich materials in the table area creates an intimate yet versatile setting for both quick lunches and evening dining.

Furthermore, the design’s dramatic potential is heightened by its response to light. The aesthetic palette is consciously mutable, shifting dramatically between the hours of operation. Under the harsh, bright glow of morning, the gloss and chrome surfaces lend an energetic, utilitarian crispness; however, as the day progresses and artificial illumination takes over, the deep reds, warm browns, and textured materials evolve to create a more intimate, sophisticated, and ambient evening setting.

A theatrical modular light fixture dramatically illuminates the counter, serving as a sculptural element with a contemporary nod to classic Italian design.

Completed in mid-2025 by RADS, the project is more than just a renovation; it is a definitive statement of refined interior architecture. Reno’s Bistrot signals a new benchmark for mixed-use commercial space in the South Australian capital and is a testament to the evolving hospitality scene in Adelaide’s Central Business District, proving that even the most functional commercial settings can be imbued with evocative narrative and timeless, high-impact design.
