Located within a 150-year-old heritage building on Melbourne’s Elizabeth Street, Mondo Gelateria is a vibrant translation of global culture into a physical space, designed by Aydnco Commercial Interiors to bridge the gap between historic preservation and contemporary retail experience.
A rhythmic dialogue between eras defines the initial impact of the interior. Aydnco has approached the storied shell of the building not as a constraint, but as a textured canvas. The original, intricate ceiling cornices remain intact, acting as a sophisticated counterpoint to the monochromatic saturation of the walls. By drenching the vertical surfaces in a warm, dusty peach hue, the studio has created a seamless volume that feels both expansive and intimate, effectively neutralizing the visual noise often found in high-traffic urban storefronts.

The celestial centerpiece serves as the project’s conceptual anchor. Suspended from the ornate ceiling is a sculptural light installation that reinterprets Mondo’s radiant sun emblem. This modern intervention features linear rays extending outward, each inscribed with global coordinates. This detail is more than a decorative flourish; it is a literal mapping of the brand’s “culture and community” mantra, grounding the local Melbourne site within a wider international context while providing a sharp, geometric contrast to the fluid curves found elsewhere in the shop.

Materiality and movement are orchestrated through a clever use of floor-to-ceiling volumes. On one side of the narrow plan, a continuous run of deep burgundy banquette seating follows the length of the wall, grounded by a light timber base. The horizontal lines of the upholstery lead the eye toward the back of the space, encouraging patrons to linger. Opposite this, a brushed metal counter snakes through the room, its reflective, undulating facade catching the warm glow of the sun-inspired light above.

The presentation of the artisanal product is treated with the precision of a gallery. The stainless steel counter houses the gelato in a way that emphasizes the “edible art” aspect of the brand. Towers of creamy textures, candied nuts, and vibrant fruits are displayed with a clarity that elevates the simple act of buying a dessert into a curated sensory event. This functional zone is framed by recessed shelving that mimics the rounded corners of the counter, creating a cohesive visual language across the service area.

Sensory immersion through color plays a vital role in the customer’s journey. The choice of a terracotta-adjacent palette evokes a nostalgic warmth, reminiscent of Mediterranean plazas, yet the application is decidedly minimalist. The lack of clashing materials allows the focus to remain on the interplay of light and shadow across the lime-washed walls. This tonal consistency ensures that the transition from the bustling Melbourne street into the gelateria feels like a deliberate shift in atmosphere.

Technical lighting and spatial depth are manipulated to enhance the narrow footprint of the heritage site. Beyond the primary sun-burst fixture, subtle integrated LED strips run along the banquette and service alcoves. This secondary layer of light adds a sense of “float” to the heavy furniture pieces, preventing the saturated color palette from feeling oppressive. It creates a soft, diffused glow that highlights the textures of the original architecture while making the modern insertions feel lightweight and integrated.

Integrating brand identity into the fabric of the environment is achieved without relying on traditional signage. The coordinates on the lighting and the specific curve of the metal counter act as spatial logos. By embedding these elements into the functional components of the fit-out, Aydnco has ensured that the brand’s story—one of global flavors and artisanal craftsmanship—is told through the medium of the space itself rather than through superficial graphics.

The final equilibrium between memory and contemporary vision transforms the Elizabeth Street address into a landmark that avoids the predictable tropes of traditional retail. By respecting the 19th-century bones of the site while grafting a bold, sun-centric identity onto them, Aydnco has created a destination that integrates seamlessly into Melbourne’s evolving urban fabric. It is an environment where the weight of history and the lightness of a shared social ritual coexist in a perfect, enveloping peach-toned harmony.
