Seamless Serenity: ENOTA’s Češča Vas Pool Complex and its Enchanting Floating Roof

ENOTA architecture studio has created a stunning new pool complex called Češča vas in Novo Mesto, Slovenia. This area is known for its recently renovated velodrome, and the pool complex fits right in. Currently, there are two interior pools and their accompanying infrastructure, but there are plans to add an exterior Olympic-size pool in the future. The design of the space cleverly uses different levels to create separate amphitheater-like areas, giving each space its own unique atmosphere.

ENOTA creates a tranquil atmosphere for the building by incorporating a subtle design feature – a floating roof that seamlessly blends with the surrounding landscape. This unique roof not only adds aesthetic appeal but also houses all the necessary facilities that don’t need direct access to the water. By strategically arranging the program, ENOTA achieves a higher ceiling above the pool area, creating a spacious and open ambiance, while maintaining a lower ceiling height at the reception desk and changing rooms for a more intimate setting.

The abundant natural light that filters through the entire perimeter gives the illusion of the roof floating above the pool, while providing breathtaking views of the surrounding nature from inside. Moreover, the cantilever roof on the entrance side serves as a canopy, complementing the sunken amphitheater surface to create an impressive exterior entrance platform.

The materiality of the pool complex is kept simple and restrained by ENOTA. The facade envelope of the floating roof is adorned with natural, unvarnished timber boards, which will gracefully age over time, seamlessly blending the building with the surrounding forest. The tilted geometry of the roof creates a captivating visual effect, resembling the local rural development.

ENOTA‘s design expertise is evident in the homogenous execution of the amphitheatral spaces, where programme platforms on different levels are crafted using local concrete with varying surface finishes. While the building’s interior remains predominantly understated, there is a deliberate material accent.

The bottom side of the floating pool roof volume is uniformly colored in a rich, warm hue, rendering the ceiling a prominent feature. This clever design choice not only provides a pleasant shelter for the users, despite the absence of filled perimeter walls in the pool space, but also discreetly invites them to explore the surrounding exterior space.
