Casa Cono, San Simón el Alto, MX / Estudio Atemporal

Designed by Mexico City-based architecture practice Estudio Atemporal, Casa Cono was envisioned as a sanctuary for a youthful couple yearning to break free from the hustle and bustle of city life. Nestled amidst a picturesque forest, this remarkable dwelling harmoniously blends living spaces, work areas, and daily rituals. The design effortlessly merges with the landscape, paying homage to the majestic trees that take center stage in this architectural masterpiece.

The architects of Casa Cono have successfully blended the ideas of modern architecture and nature, creating a space where the boundaries between the internal and external realms are blurred. The design seamlessly integrates with the terrain, respecting the presence of each tree, elevating these natural elements as central figures within the architectural narrative. The structure comprises two rectangular volumes, artfully layered and rotated, forming a geometric interplay that organizes the architectural program across two levels in a straightforward and sincere manner.

One of the main goals of the design was to optimize scenic perspectives throughout the space. Predominantly translucent facades permeate the volumes, creating a weightless quality and fostering a profound connection between the internal and external realms. Expansive windows act as portals to the outdoors, inviting contemplation of the interplay between trees, light, wind, and the forest’s symphony, enriching the architectural encounter.

As one steps into Casa Cono, they are greeted by a well-thought-out floor plan that seamlessly blends work and leisure areas. The ground floor delineates public spaces, partitioned by a sheltered patio leading to the entrance. This zone branches into a study on one side and a unified living, dining, and kitchen area on the other. The design ensures that the inhabitants are never far away from the beauty of the natural surroundings, with ample views of the trees and forest beyond.

Ascending the staircase, which acts as a vertical connector integrated into the primary volumes, reveals the private quarters. Here, a nuanced play of materials and scale creates a more inviting and cozy ambiance for the bedrooms. The upper level exudes a sense of tranquility and relaxation, providing the couple with a peaceful sanctuary away from the chaos of the city.

As one approaches the house from the vehicular access, it becomes apparent that the structure appears to be effortlessly floating above the ground. Following a meandering path that stretches across the landscape, one eventually reaches the pinnacle, where the entrance of the house reveals itself at the back, offering a breathtaking panoramic view upon stepping inside, reminiscent of a vast observation deck.

This harmonious coexistence between architecture and nature has resulted in an abode that not only provides a functional living space but also nourishes the soul.
