The owners’ vision was clear: a home without restrictive corridors, flooded with sunlight, and surrounded by greenery. They desired a dwelling that not only met their practical needs and energy efficiency standards but also exuded a distinctive and motivating charm.

The design of Lang House by Austin Maynard Architects showcases a striking contrast. While the exterior, clad in durable equitone panels, exudes a sense of purposeful simplicity that complements its vibrant South Yarra setting, the interior radiates warmth with its use of natural timber, gentle curves, and abundant plant life. A central timber ‘tree trunk’ element unifies the bathrooms on both levels, enhancing the overall sense of unity and harmony within the home.

Despite the constraints of the site, Austin Maynard Architects effectively utilized the available space. The presence of large windows and openings on three sides allows natural light to flood the interior, while a strategically positioned void adds a sense of spaciousness. The open floor plans and a white perforated steel staircase contribute to the overall feeling of expansiveness.

The Lang House by Austin Maynard Architects serves as a prime example of the significance of meticulous detailing. Every aspect, from custom light fixtures to the chevron-patterned tiles in the ensuite that mirror the exterior facade, has been carefully thought out. The architects even integrated a steel support column that serves as a display shelf for treasured items.

The Lang House was envisioned by the owners as their forever home, a space that could adapt to their changing needs. The design focuses on versatility and avoids features that are specific to a certain age group, ensuring its relevance for years to come.
